One thought on cause that has crossed my mind is that ticks and mosquitoes carry some really nasty diseases. Lyme's disease comes to mind. With her long hair it is quite possible she had ticks that I didn't see.
On a side note, anything that causes blood to be visible on the animals is something I notice. I like to believe that any bite that was from something larger than an insect is something I would notice.
