Hopefully it's not too serious and he just bruised himself somehow. I hope you two will have lots of riding time together when you're both healed and the weather allows. It will be awhile before I can ride. In addition to wrenching my back, I also gave myself an abdominal hernia and just had surgery to fix it. I'm down for 6 weeks, but I'll keep myself down longer and only do what I have to do. It will be scorching hot anyway.
I'll need to take him to the vet for a coggins test plus I found a sore spot on his ribs, right side towards the back. He lays his ears back, telling me it hurts. I need to get him checked out, if it hurts, I need to find out why. Don't think I want to saddle him up and get on for him to "show" me that it hurts and want me off. LOL I'll have plenty of time to get it figured out, another reason that I'm glad I was in no hurry to ride him.
You should submit this to picture of the week! Beautiful horse in the perfect setting!
Happy for you AND Max!This morning I got a saddle out and brought it in the house. I put a tarp on the floor, put saddle on it and saddle soaped it. It was filthy. I bought a new saddle pad last week.
I took it outside and put in in the back of the truck, tailgate down. Pad, brush, and I haltered Max and tied him to the truck. I brushed him, saddled him and took him for a walk. We walked down the road and back. I unsaddled, put him in his pen and gave him alfalfa.
This evening neighbor Courtney came over, just for someone to be here the first time I got on him. He’s so tall that I can’t reach the stirrup. I stood on the tailgate and Courtney led him up to it. I got in the saddle. I rode him around in the yard. Max did good.

He was responsive, didn’t act goofy, calm, so I decided to ride him down the road. Riding past the sheep, a scared Rocky took off.

We stopped at the neighbor’s.

Max did good on our first ride. We just walked down the road, he was looking at everything. Once he spooked at a fallen tree, but calmed down quickly. He gave some cows the eye, but we scared them and they ran. He got a little pissy one time because he stopped and I kicked him and clucked at him. I can see where he could pitch a fit. Over all, it was a good first ride, we both need more rides.
I almost couldn’t get off him. I swung my leg over and barely could reach the ground to get my other foot out of the stirrup. I’m going to get a stirrup extension that hangs off the saddle horn.
