How do you name your goats? Do you use your farm name some how? Do you follow the alphabet? Do you use something different for those registered vs those not registered?

We named our little pygmies Handsome and Cuteness LOL But if we are starting a herd, which will mean more babies at some point, I would like some system to help with naming.

Just wondering what others do?

We decided to have a Biblical theme for our goats. All goats born on our property will receive the name of a place in the Bible. It goes well with our herd name CrownofThorns.

If they are registered then you would need to be a member of some goat group then you would register a herd name. Like mine is Nu*Shady Acres for my Alpines. So I take whatever name I choose to name my goat kids I just add onto my herdname. Example : Nu*Shady Acres Pheonix Dance. I usually pick a name for my goats based on their dams name. I have a doe named Kiss, so all of her kids will be named something like Hugs, Smooches, etc.........That's what I do anyway.

If you're going to become ADGA members (which I'd suggest, it's cheaper to register kids if you're a member)....you can do it in one of your kid's names and get a 'junior membership' which is cheaper.

I really, REALLY wish now that I'd put more thought into our herd name....
Roll Farms is just so BORING....but it is what it is, lol.

You'll need to register your herd name, and then all of your kids will be "herd name so and so"

For instance, our kids are "Roll Farms (insert name here)".
You'll also need to pick a herd tattoo...ours is RF11 (RF1 was taken...)

With dairy goats, there are several ways people go about naming them....the method we use is Sire's theme / dams name's first letter

We used to have a buck named Hurricane...we bred him to Dolly.
Derricho is a type of storm, that started w/ a D, so that's how Derri got her name.

You don't HAVE to....it's just a common way that makes it easy to recall who the kid's parents are.

I use this site to help me sometimes :
http://thesaurus.com/

I've also been known to look up movies w/ titles that have the sire's name in them and name kids after characters in the movie.

If I had more animals to keep track of, I'd do it by the dam's first name. Like the kids' names would start with the same letter as the dam. Luckily, sheep just get numbers and not names, so they're easy. I just name them whatever I want. :p Last year I let the new owners pick the names of the doe kids when I sold them.

Since mine are not registered I let the kids and hubby pick names for them. My oldest daughter has already decided that if our Abigail has girls they will be named after flowers. She really wants a Daisy. lol

Out of the Blue - b/c his sire's name is Blue Daze and I didn't even know his dam was pregnant!
Joyous Surprise - b/c she came a couple weeks early and dam's name is Joy
Yella Dynamit - b/c his dam's name was Delicate Dynamit and sire was Yella Fella

My daughters currently have us on a Disney theme. Disney princesses to be more precise. We have Ariel and Jasmine.

Last year I went with a western theme so we had Shady Acres Jesse James, Shady Acres Davy Crockett, Shady Acres Mary Jane, Shady Acres Willa, Shady Acres Elly Mae. This year will be different though cause I have more doe's so I will be doing different themes based on the dam's name.
