I am getting two nubians, from what I have read they provide great milk. They will both be bred when I get them so I have some time to prepare but are there any pointers you can prepare me with for goat ownership. I have 3 pygmy weathers but that is hardly the same.

READ, READ & READ some more! Seriously. Go through the whole section on goats & whatever seems appropriate for dairy goats, kidding, etc.
Research is your friend and there's a lot of good info here.
Good luck & enjoy!

Are they first fresheners or experienced with being milked? That will make a big difference in my reply.....

There are a bunch of good threads right on this site, too.

I love my dairy goats! I will be hopefully milking up to four this spring...I am milking only one right now, and we could certainly use more milk if we had it. Milking is such a peaceful time.

Usually.

Congratulations!! Have fun!! But as others said...read..read...read is right..and I dont know if you have milked before..but have an expirenced milker show you or learn how...there are important steps you dont wanna miss. There is a few good videos on "you tube" that explain the steps..so its worth exploring. And definately get "Storeys Guide to Dairy Goats" great book with alot of info!!!

Good luck!! Happy milking...and yes Nubians are good milkers!!

.............I agree definately get "Storeys Guide to Dairy Goats", it's a GREAT BOOK I agree with a WEALTH of info. You can get it at Tractor Supply for usually less than $20.00 I got it & read Everything I could from www.backyardchickens.com, www.backyardherds.com & also www.fiascofarm.com. CONGRATULATIONS on your new Dairy goat experience. Making homemade yogurt is a Favorite of me & my family. A recipe for that is in the recipe section I believe on both backyardchickens & backyardherds. :D Good Luck!!!!! :)
