Is it ok for ants to be in the bowl the goat feed is in? If it isn't ok, what is the best way to prevent them from being in it? The feed bowl is attached to the side of the lot the goat is in, so it's not right on the ground or anything.

You could fix the ants their own little feeder and fill it with corn meal. Anything you place it in that cannot be accessed by your other animals or they will eat it all before the ants can enjoy their own little treat. The corn meal is corrosive to their bowels and causes peritonitis when the bowels ulcerate and rupture. They will carry this feed back to their nests and the larvae will get the benefits also.

This has worked successfully in my house for the past several years and I just passed it on to a patient of mine and he was amazed to find the huge ant problem in his house dwindle off and disappear in about 3-4 days.

Sprinkle some Sevin dust onto the ground and anywhere the ants can crawl up to the bowl.

Personally ... It isn't a product I would be using around dairy animals or anywhere they could possibly inhale or ingest it.

Well we found a solution. DH made a contraption that allows the feeder to hang, so that it is off the ground and off the fence. Seems to be working so far. We may try the corn meal idea for the house though as we are always having problems with ants getting in the house.
