I was planning to butcher the meat chickens this weekend, but they weren’t tolerating the heat and I lost 2 this week. I had the day off so I decided to do it today.
It’s about 3,000,000 degrees out and the idea of standing outside to butcher sounded horrific. I’d decided I wasn’t going to be freezing them whole so I killed them outside and then brought them inside to cut them up.
I also repaired the frost free hydrant at the barn. It’s had poor flow and has been leaking for a while. It was taking 45 minutes to fill one tank. I ordered the repair kit on Amazon for $17. I did have to get my BIL to help get the head of the hydrant off and the plunger out, but I was able to get everything put back together by myself.
I got the water turned back on, fiddled with the plunger a little bit and now I’ve got a functional hydrant again! Good flow and it actually shuts off all the way!
That’s why I raise chickens in early spring. It’s a lot of work, heat makes it worse. But I order meat chicks, yours look like cockerels of layer breeds. I’m sure yours have more flavor. I pack mine on ice on the back porch and bring them in the house 3 at a time to process.
