Around here there's a shortage of mostly everything, including farmers and vets who know how to disbud a goat kid.

I took a doeling to a local farmer who disbuds his goats and agreed to do mine for me. Well, let's just say he didn't do such a great job. His iron was not the x-30 or x-50, but rather another style of iron similar to this: http://www.google.com/imgres?start=...dsp=24&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:165,i:238&tx=85&ty=98

(Sorry for the long link!)

Anyway, he said he had the x-30 but that it didn't get hot enough so he used the other kind. Well, I think the diameter was too large and didn't get close enough around the buds. Now she's got the same buds that she did before, just larger because they're growing. She'll be 4 weeks on Monday (4/16). My iron should arrive here tomorrow. My question is, would trying to disbud her again work? If she's past the point of no return, then I'm going to be really ticked that she went through that and I paid that guy for nothing.

What would you do?

Due to a poor job on our part, we messed up a buckling. I could tell the horns were going to grow.

I had our vet come out and reburn. Can you find another goat breeder or another vet in your area to reburn? How old is the goat now??

We use a Rhinehart 50 on ours. the diameter of the inside of the hole on ours is l/2 inch. It does a great job. See if you can find someone else.

When we first started disbudding it was a real shocker to me, and DH too. But we kept at it, and we have finally gotten to where we are comfortable, if not happy, doing it.

My iron is the x-30 and it'll be here tomorrow. She'll be 4 weeks on Monday.

One of the vets wanted me to drop her off in the morning and pick her up in the afternoon. That was ridiculous for a 30 second procedure.

I'm going to do them from now on. Just want to know if it'll be worth anything to try to re-do it this weekend.

That went over much better than I thought.

In school I had to do surgeries and castrations, and they went off without a hitch because it wasn't my pet that I was working on. I removed my emotions, and did what appears to be a pretty good job. If she ends up with scurs, I think it's because they were done wrong in the first place.

Now I'm kicking myself for not getting an iron in the first place!

Wow, I am glad you posted this because I bought a doe with twins that were supposedly disbudded at 4 days old. Well, they are growing horns! I'd love to disbud them again, as the little buckling would make a wonderful market wether. So as long as the iron fits over it, I can do them again? They aren't that big yet.

I got the 3/8" tip and it did fit over them. I was worried when I saw it, but surprisingly it fit just fine.
