Hi--I have a young Alpine Doe ( 15 months old). I have noticed a circular haped hair loss on her face/ cheek. Just on one side. She is acting fine--eating, drinking, pooping normally. The rest of her coat looks nice and shiny. It is about the size of my fist-- It is odd-- very round. Skin not broken--just looks like she was trimmed in that one spot. She does rub her face against the side of the barn, fence, etc, but I don't know if that is causing it, or because of it.

My other 11 goats show no sign of this..She was wormed late last fall.
We supplement with minerals (block). Currently, she is getting hay daily, with 3 plus acres of brushy weedy field to graze . also about one cup of pellets per day.

any ideas what this could be, or how to treat it?

Thanks for all replies!
Pat

Could be a rub but it could also be ringworm or an insect bite. Use gloves and take a closer look at it to see if there are any red edges to the circle or if it is raised or crusty at all.

just went and took a closer look. It is not raised, red or crusty. Her exposed skin is shiny. Also just saw a roundish spot on her shoulder where it appears that the hair is a little different color--that spot is about the same size, but the hair is still there--just a lighter color brown--amybe will develop into the same as the one on her face? Do you think ringworm?

Thanks, Pearce pastures! When we got our goats, we bought a first aid kit for goats. In it is a spray from Agrilabs: "FOOT ROT & RINGWORM SPRAY"
active ingredient:Benzalkonium Chloride 0.15%
Instructions: Soak affected area liberally with Foot rot and Ringworm spray. Apply daily until hair begins to grow. Leave sprayed areas uncovered. Rinse sprayed areas with clear water before reapplying. Results should be apparent in a matter of days. If condition persists, consult your vet.
Is this something you would use?
Thanks, Pat
