I have a 3yr old Veitmanese Potbelly sow. She is not a friendly pet, and I have only owned her for about 7 months. She is anything but small, at least 2 ft tall or more and weighs about 180-200 lbs.
She was supposed to have a litter of piglets back in the middle of Oct. but she didn't, guess she didn't catch. :idunno
NOW, for the last 2-3 weeks, she has been more short tempered than normal, sleeping most of the time, eating less than half the amount as usual which is resulting in her losing weight. Also, she seems to be weeping urine/or some kind of fluid (not blood), so her rearend and tail continue to get matted with straw/covered with straw.
I can't get in her pen to take her temperature, as she barks and tries tries to come after me.
Anyone with any ideas what might be her probem?? :hu
I am not very pig smart, have only had pigs for about a yr.

I don't know a thing about pigs, but I'm wondering if she had aborted a fetus or something. It definitely sounds like she has an infection of some sort. The not eating, weight loss, and oozing fluid sounds like an infection that's making her feel lousy. If seeking a vet's advice is out of the question, then maybe treat her with penicillin? Just my uneducated advice. I hope you get help from someone more experienced.

Hi Four winds
Doesn't sound too good and dont want to spook you as I'm guessing pig pyometria due to discharge (tail matted).
It sounds like you have got your hands full with a not too friendly sick pig.
One or two on here might disagree but I would recommend at this point to end her life.
So sorry to be neg and wish you luck - hopefully someone else will have an easy remedy

Isn't that the illness/infection that can lead to the uterous bursting if not treated quickly?
peritonitis follows.

I am late to the game on this one, but I would go with Royd's suggestion.

Hi everyone!
Thanks for all the advice!!!
I believe my pig is fine now, well she seems to be!
Late last night she started to abort some loooong over due piglets! :sick They were all dead and I snached them away because she was triying to eat them.
Her discharge doesnt smell at all this morning, and she went right over to her feed trough and ate everything while wagging her tail (which she hasn't done for weeks)!! She was still very miserable while I was trying to get the dead piglets, but that is to be expected!!!
I was prepared for the worst, so am glad she seems to be feeling better! :weee But, am still disappointed about the piglets!:(
I do still wonder why she never gave birth on or around Oct.23. Between then and last night is very, very overdue!!! I wonder about the cause of this?????

Not a pig.... but I lost a ewe from a retained fetus (one twin born, the other not). We got it out, but she turned septic from all the dead lamb toxins and ended up dying later. It was a long time ago that this happened ....it was maybe a week later she died. It sure wouldn't hurt to get a blood specimen on her, or at least treat with a wide spectrum antibiotic for 7-10 days.
Good luck.

Now weather pot bellies are the same Idea as commercial pigs I am not sure... But when I worked on a pig farm I had worked with quite a few sows and retaining fetuses and then aborting anywhere from two days to two weeks after due date.... When it happens one of two things happen, the sow is given antibiotics and flushed out (by an experienced hand) or put down. Either way the sows are never bred again. Best thing to do for her is to watch her carefully and give her some shots of penicillin at the least, if not get someone out there to flush her out.
hope that helps some

Yuck! SO sorry you had to go through this. Lepto can cause this - lepto is pretty much everywhere & if not vaccinated the animals normally build up an immunity to it so next time round she could be alright.Without a diagnosis though it is impossible to tell. We had a ewe do this on us last year & we honestly thought she was going to die BUT she made it & is pregnant again so hoping for the best this time round.
