The Ambivalent Shepherd

Dry thunderstorm. Had to rush the sheep feed and the Maremma’s chow. Lots of lightning and a spattering of rain, dang. As I figure out what I need to do with my Moses issues it is a tremendous help and comfort to know other people have had experiences and can offer advice. Thank you one and all.

Well visiting YouTube didn’t put me to sleep. So I’m back. How spoiled am I that I can’t find something to send me to Sleepville? The whole night owl thing is overrated. Decades of white, blue and no collar jobs on the graveyard shift left me with occasional insomnia. Dang and I have things to do starting in a couple of hours. Ick. Adulthood. Maybe I can give myself the lecture I contemplated for a young family member who’s “Life sucked”. Yes it sucks. At 22 you have no idea how much. It will continue to do so until You do something about it. Put those anti depressants down, drink like the rest of us and count your blessings. Nothing says resilience like doing a major ad presentation or unloading 4 or 5 tons of dry goods with a hangover. Now that sucks. Probably why I’m not the favorite aunt. Going to prank my brother and tell him I got a tattoo. Thought about getting this one but it has some possible pagan meaning so nope. Personally it reminds me of a few stock trailer load ups.

When my dogs are barking idiots, obviously they know something I don't with my feeble sense of smell (thank you Covid) non-night vision and deaf ears, I go outside with a flashlight. I usually stand on the porch and talk to them until they quiet down. One night they just wouldn't settle down, kept barking in the direction of the back of the house so I went to investigate. Carson ran ahead of me, kept circling my car so I shined the light under the car and found an armadillo under it. That's what they were going nuts about. It must have found it's way into the middle field a few weeks later because they killed it.

Anyway, it helps the dogs if you go check on them. They know you are their back up. Carry your pistol and a flashlight. You are already wide awake, might as well take a moonlight stroll.

I struggle with insomnia as well. . . I have a racing mind, even when I'm tired. If I'm very desperate, I'll put in an ear bud so I don't disturb DH and listen to a podcast.
I used to go lay on the couch and listen to a podcast without earbuds but that always woke DH up. He would come find me to see if something was wrong.

This is me... my mind goes everywhere at night. Sometimes it takes hours to settle down.

If I can't sleep I read a paper book, that usually will do it. Ebooks don't work, it has to be paper.

If the insomnia is stubborn, reading from the Bible is close to 100% effective at helping me fall asleep.

That's not meant to be disparaging!

I discovered audiobooks on YouTube. That’s helped a lot. Last night I was at loose ends. Hubbs was out of town, the dogs were noisy and I learned this morning that the hoop house has a loose roof panel that rattles and thumps.
