10 years in and still using buckets. A friend has a neat set up, a 3 sided shelter for the water tub, with float and automatic refill. Water stays cool and he’s not dragging hoses around. I’ll have to investigate that more closely.

Test the water from the nipples to make sure that it is acually cool and that the metal nipples don't get hot. We had automatic horse drinkers once but the bowls got so hot that the horses would not drink from them. We went back to deep troughs.

Same thing happened in the rabbitry when our buried waterline ruptured and DH ran a new line across the ceiling of the barn instead of burying it. The new water line was fine until summer temps and then we suddenly lost several rabbits. They weren't drinking. I checked the water nipples to see if they were clogged and they burned my hand. The water was almost boiling temperature. I got crocks and watered everyone until the weekend when we dug up the old line and put in the new one underground.
