Today for the first time since they've been penned up together for 5 months, the wether was BAAAAing really loud and running away from the buck. Well, I can understand why (because of rut) but I tried to have the buck leave him alone. Is that a good idea? What is the best way to handle this next time? He eventually got distracted by me and left the wether alone.

That happens when intact males are together, not just buck/wethers, especially when they are in rut. They will aggravate the stew out of each other, especially the dominate buck in the group. I just keep an eye out that nobody gets hurt in the process. If you separated them, they would be running around looking for each other.

I'd pull the wether out of that pen, and put him with your does. If the buck can see the other goats, he should be fine by himself. Heck, I pull a buck when the others are terrorizing him. After a few days of time out, I can usually have him rejoin the herd.

thank you so much for the good advice. I'll do that next time. I didn't know that I could leave the buck alone, I thought he would have a fit if the wether wasn't there. :)

He might fuss, in fact both of them my miss each other, but that is soon over.
