Coffee anyone ?

@fuzzi I love the Spangled pics. I almost got Spangled Cornish instead of my Dark Cornish and recently got 6 Spangled old english game chicks. One nice thing about the hens color is that it is different than all the other breeds so it's easy to let them free range as chicks until it's time to separate and pen into specific breeding pens. I'm not sure how many of the other varieties hens are the same color as each other. Also a speckled pattern is good camo for predators and a "pretty" color to people.
Thank you! They're actually bantam Speckled Sussex. They're hatchery quality, though I'm trying to breed the best to the best. I rehomed two "orangy" roosters, but kept one hen despite her yellow shanks. I don't breed her due to that fault, but she still provides me with eggs. And conversation.

Rip Stavely (last name may not be spelled right) famous for his RIR says keep the 1 in 10 rule. Out of 10 chicks you'll only get 1 that goes into the breeder pen. Some get straight culled as chicks then those who pass that may still end up in freezer camp or as egg layers or whatever just NOT in the breeding pen.
That's how you get better breeding stock. By NOT breeding those who are borderline, you only have the above borderline and eventually all your birds are better for it. Good nutrition and hard culling can help all breeds AND species really

Good evening y'all :frow
Been a busy weekend. Sold a couple more feeders. Decided the feeders we were taking aren't going to work as planned so they will be listed for sale. I'd kept the newer goat feeders thinking I could use them for the dairy calves and they just aren't working well. So I'll get them listed this week. Have had a few more folks allegedly interested in a few more things but none have panned out. Mostly people wanting things for free. Keeping at it. Getting harder to feed now with no hay feeders left. We knew it would get tricky towards the end. We're using hay bags for hay now. Jerseys are complaining because they can't just pick out the candy and leave the rest. Have mercy all is lost they have to work for their hay. 🤦‍♀️The beef cows have no problem eating out of them. They are bags for cows. :idunnoWe'd feed the jerseys on the ground but instead of eating it they use it as a toilet then bed instead. :he
Got the two jerseys put in full time with their older calf and new grafts yesterday. One has taken her new calves as her own already. They will likely get turned out to pasture in a few more days after I'm sure we're over the over eating scours threat. The other cow is still being a pill. So she's taking extra time but the calves are doing pretty well and being persistent. She usually takes a few weeks then loves her new calves. Works well to keep them from overeating at the moment at least.
Got all the cows/heifers bred this weekend. A couple were TAI (timed AI) and didn't feel like they were ready for breeding but we'll see in a few weeks. Was shocked the jersey 2 year old that we had such a problem with last year and ended up visiting the dairies bull synchronized and had a solid standing heat. That was unexpected. Hopefully timing was right with her. After she lost her first pregnancy last season she never had a standing heat again. The bull was able to get er' done but her standing window was so fast her tag never even got fully rubbed. This is DH's cow so I'm trying to get her bred back. What's shocking and I had to admit this weekend is she's quickly becoming a really good cow other than being a spoiled brat and often doesn't want to cooperate with me but will do anything DH asks. 🤦‍♀️She just melts when she sees him. :rant
Time to go wake up DH. Y'all have a great evening! :hugs

I have to brag about my husband. He participated in a long drive golf competition today and took 1st place in the men's senior division. 276 yards, 2nd place was 258 yards. It was such a fun way to spend our afternoon.

It was a fundraiser for breast cancer, 2live2cure. They brought in $4500, so awesome. They send out boxes with supplies in them, to breast cancer patients.
