We've never had problems like that. But we also feed ours the same feed year round.

That's how we used to when we had them and everybody I've met around here has them together.

I'll put it this way...Owls prey on rabbits/hares in the wild(Hawks to but less so because most rabbits are nocturnal) so yes they definitely will if they don't have a cover. Also I wouldn't recommend mesh.

If your cow gets spooked it will go through those boards. At work I've seen where cows bent the metal cow panels so bad they were thrown away.

She may see the mares as a threat and the young mare got to close.
