Okay I'm glad to hear its not uncommon for them to kill poultry even at 7 months. I was afraid that once they tasted meat it was almost impossible to stop them from killing again. I'm able to work with them every day but probably haven't done enough with them and the chickens.
The pups do...
Hi everyone!
I desperately need advice about our Anatolians and chickens!
We have two 7 month old Anatolian shepherd puppies and are training them to guard our livestock and chickens. Their names are Joshua and Caleb and they are both unneutered. However, we are having problems with Joshua...
Yes we love our cats! Most of them are either strays or kittens that people have dumped on our property. We lost one of our cats over this last weekend though. He stayed out too late and we think coyotes got him:(
So now we have just 6 cats and are searching for another LGD to help protect...
Scratch And Peck does look awesome! We are all the way down in Texas though. I doubt we could afford the shipping. But I have found a feed mill called "Hugeland" that makes non-gmo feeds. They have non-gmo chicken feed as well as dairy feed for cows. So I am thinking I can get our cow on...
We had been milking our Jersey cow once a day for almost a year now (just recently dried her up). It took about 30 minutes each day to milk her and she gave around 2 gallons at each milking--sometimes a little less if she was in heat. From 2 gallons we got around quart of cream to churn into...
I think this may be an old thread but I love the idea of BYH merchandise...I would especially love to see BYH t-shirts or sweatshirts. What about having captions like "I love my...(Jersey Cow, Pygmy Goat, Jacob sheep, etc...) and then a picture of the animal below the caption?
Between goats and sheep I agree that sheep seem to birth easier. I have had both goats and sheep and have never had to help the sheep with lambing. Goats were another story--I had to assist several kiddings.:/
My ewes tend to bag up with milk about a week before lambing. That's the only way I...
Just wanted to say that I (TJS) have changed my username from "TJS" to "TexasJacobs". The "TJS" was supposed to stand for Texas Jacob Sheep (our farm name) but it seemed...awkward I think. Anyway just wanted everyone to know that TJS has switched to TexasJacobs.
Okay I am going to call Premier tomorrow. I used Oster blade wash to clean the blades between each sheep--I didn't know you could use water. Would using blade wash have hurt the shears? Next time I think we will use the hot water because the blade wash didn't really clean the blades that...
We have been attempting to shear our small flock of Jacob sheep this past weekend and are having some difficulties. I just bought a pair of Premier 4000s shears with the "spirit" and "spitfire" comb and cutters. These shears are brand new. When we began shearing Saturday, we noticed that we...
Well I went ahead and bought a bag of oats from our local feed store. They don't say organic (darn) but at least they're not GMOs. Most all feed stores in our area stock only Purina or ACCO and I feel pretty sure that both of those brands have GMOs in them. I am trying to figure out a way to...
I have been trying to find a non-GMO feed for my chickens. I had been under the impression that Purina Layena was organic and non-GMO but after looking into it I realized that the bag never says "contains no GMO". I had heard that whole oats are safe for chickens and I was wondering if (since...
