Looked all day and no babies there was no mooing and no noise and in the cornfield there weren't any trampled stocks the tracks might not have been calf tracks there in one place there was only 1 track what are the chances a group of 6 calves will leave only 1 track? There are some people with drones that might come out tomorrow to look.

I am assuming that your parents also reported this to the local sheriff and police depts.
Does South Dakota have a cattle association like TX does for things like possible stolen livestock? Does SD require brands on animals ? I would alert any other sale barns within a couple hundred miles.

Sadly, yes, they are worth a lot of money and being friendly, it would be easier to steal them then animals that are wilder.

I feel very very bad for you. We worry about the same thing here with the value of the cattle now... we constantly are going and checking at pastures that are away from home. We have some pretty good neighbors around the pastures ..... mostly all cattle people... they understand what the cattle are worth and we keep watch on each others pastures and any activity that we see and animals... There have been some cattle stolen in the past when the prices had gotten high .... one guy was caught at a farmers barn, loading up cattle the farmer had gotten in a lot to catch them and get ready to ship the following week.

Hoping that they turn up somewhere for you....

someone came over with a drone and we didn't see them with that but the drone wasn't for like pics and stuff like that so it couldn't zoom or anything like that. tomorrow there might be a different person with a drone to come look. the cornfields they might be in are getting cut next week so maybe if we don't find them before then the chopper will scare them out so we can catch them. we called the closest sale barn, and I don't know if my mom called any other sale barns yet. my brothers football coach is a sheriff so tonight he is going to ask if anyone has called in saying they found calves, but we haven't called the sheriff to report it yet. me and my dad drove around for like 2 hours looking for them but we didn't see or hear anything.

I counted 10 babies Wednesday morning, and we were gone all day Wednesday and didn't feed the calves until about 10 pm so we didn't count them, but my oldest sis said only 2 calves that came up to eat. But I counted them Thursday morning and there were only 4 babies I think they escaped Wednesday afternoon. If they were stolen, they couldn't have stolen the calves Wednesday night because it would have been loud enough to wake everyone up and we have dogs that would have been barking. Someone could have driven up and stolen them Wednesday afternoon, but I don't think that even if someone knew we were gone, and no one was home they probably still wouldn't come up to the pen and start loading them in broad daylight but in the last 2 days if someone saw calves wandering around, they could have taken them off the road.

Does SD require brands on animals ?
as far as I know SD does not require brands on animals. All the calves have ear tags if someone stole them and brought them to a sale barn, they would probably cut the tags out, but I know all of the info on Waffles tag. Waffles ear tag number is 391826 he was born on 3-3-25 and he weighed 108 pounds when he was born. on his ear tag he has the number and birthday on the front and on the back says his birthweight. I don't know any of the other calves' numbers. and even if they cut Waffle's tag out, he has a scar right under his right eye from the swelling.
