After Kidding what supplements and/or shots do you give your DOE and KIDS?

The doe gets alfalfa to boost calcium.

If kids are weak they get a shot of Bo-Se.

CD&T Shot - Administered SQ:

Pregnant Does: 3-6weeks before kidding

Kids: Mama vaccinated as above – kid first is 4-5 wks of age - Booster 3-4 weeks later

Kids: Mama not vaccinated as above- First at 1 wk of age - Booster 3-4 wks later

what is SQ

Subcutaneous, it means under the skin.

Giving Injections:
  • Make sure the goat is in a secure position.
  • Pinch the skin near the armpit. Put the needle through the skin and release your pinch.
  • Slowly press down on the plunger of the syringe to inject the goat with the vaccine or medicine.
  • Take the needle out and rub the injection site with your fingers to encourage the fluids' absorption by the body.

I prefer to pull the skin rather than pinch it, to make a bit of a "tent". Put the needle into the center of the triangle area, then let go, and that way you are sure to get well under the skin, but not into anything else. I also give em a good rub afterward.

I've also given my weaker kids probiotics and vit B

I use the tent method for giving SQ inj. also. I do the Nutridrench at birth as well as the probiotic. The Nutridrench has B complex vitamin and it is absorbed immediately. I like the B-12 inj. for adult goats and the Nutridrench for newborns because it has most all B vitamins and is molasses based so it is rich in iron and easily starts to be absorbed into the vessels in the mouth and the rest is absorbed into the stomach. It will in most cases stimulate a weak kid's appetite and is like catnip to a cat. It gives the newborn a boost of energy to get walking quicker after birth and get then nursing faster. This stuff is a miracle product.
