OK I thoght everything was finally going my way. I got 7 acers of fence complete 5ft no climb hors wire with good strong orner post, i purchased 12 nice 100% boer goats 1 buck and 11 does, every one of the does are bredd for a september baby, then today a large black bear went thru the fence after my 300 lb buck. I just happened to be out tending the chickens and I,saw ,heard him going into the fence, I threw rocks and sticks until he left. Fence is fixed buck has been calmed but I know the bear will be back just about kidding time I'm thinking. any advice on bear repellant?

Oh no. I would get a gun and be on 24 hour watch. I am so glad you are ok and your goats are. Thank God you were out there. Hope it all works out well.

I don't have bears around here, but I have read on other forums that electric fence is a great bear deterrent. It sure is a good thing you were out there and saw him! Next time...don't throw rocks....use something with a bit more punch to it.

actually i read about a guy who built a "dog moat" a double fence several feet wide (5 ft? 8 ft? something like that) around his herd and and had his dogs patrol in that fence within a fence.

i know there are also shells you can buy that are kinda like fire crackers (for lack of a better description) - they are super loud.

I hope it doesn't come back but you should prepare yourself for if it does. I would rather try to deter it rather than have to confront it again...either with a dog or some other fashion.

I know dogs will help but after a neighbor of mine let his dog roam free and kill about 30 dominque hens and 45 guinea fowl that I raised from chicks, I refuse to own a dog of any kind. Kindly neighbor said he never owned a dog when all the while he was scraching the culprits ears who was lying on kindly neighbors porch. as long as I don't own a dog I'll never have to ly to anyone about the damage my dog has done. i do keep gun with me whenever I'm outside now just in case Mr. Bear shows back up.

Although even a large dog may not fare well against a Bear by itself, several would make the bear want to hunt in a safer place. The Turkish LGD's tend to be much more defensive, and the Boz are one of the most physically capable.
But a small pack of most LGDs would probably be enough to deter. I would avoid the bulky

I would also research any other means of control, as getting and training a LGD pack takes time and an investment.

I cant say that I would have gone and throw rocks at a Bear,,,, you have my respect!!!

After installing the powerful fencer and electric wire....bait it with some half strips of raw bacon folded over the wire so the bear/coyote/kindlyneighborsdog has to bite the fence to get the bacon. Make sure the bacon sticks to itself so the wind won't blow it off.

Redtailgal, This dog is actually the father to one of my pups. He still lives in Turkey ;(
The Boz Mature slow physically, and my pups are not as visually impressive "YET"
Here are some pictures of my pups. 9 months old for the female, and 10 months old for the male. I have heard comments about their being SKINNY. Let me tell you, they lack for nothing, are wormed, food out 24/7, get plenty of exercise. Just part of the breed. Plus, to allow them to grow to rapidly would cause potential for bone and joint issues.

Did not mean to hiJack the trhead. This is one breed that would have the speed, strength, skill, and drive to confront a Bear,,,, and survive. Plus have the intelligence and agility to know how to stay out of the bears mouth. In Turkey, they defend against Wolves and Bear (Smaller Black Bear). Several of them would make a good team


I LOVE the Bacon and Hot Wire trick. Have done the same for neighbors dogs and coyotes. Some saddistic satisfaction comes from watching a dog that killed a bunch of your stuff grab a mouth full of REVENGE!!!

You need to get it on Video the next time you go out to throw rocks at a BEAR, would make a viral youtube video. Or evidence against you in a sanity hearing,,,haha.
