Yesterday I hit the panic button. Buford came towards the night pen with SOMETHING in his mouth. I ran outside to see what it was and he had caught a rabbit and was preparing to eat it. After Sheba dying so horribly and not even know why or what happened, I took his rabbit away from him. Later I felt bad about that and I probably should have let him keep his rabbit, but panic over ruled logic. He should thank me for saving his life.

Layne was wearing a sweat hoodie yesterday evening and Buford growled at him. A serious growl, he can get scary. Second time he's reacted to the sweat hoodie. I told Layne there's something on that hoodie that Buford doesn't like, wash it. I wear sweat hoodies all the time in winter, so it's not the hoodie itself, there must be something on it. Not even with the hoodie up on his head, but Buford clearly does NOT like the hoodie.

So Layne wanted to feed Buford, trying to make up for taking Sheba away from him. Layne took her away, loading her up in the truck. The last time Buford saw Sheba alive, she was in Layne's arms. The next time he saw her, she was dead. Must be Layne's fault. Buford got all excited over his food, Layne sat in the chair next to him, but he kept walling his eyes at Layne, with suspicion. Layne took off the hoodie and tossed it away, Buford got more friendly. Yup, must be something on the hoodie. Layne is trying real hard to make up to Buford for taking Sheba away from him.

Two months and a few weeks and he'll have his paws busy with the lil' one.
Sad thing is you can't explain that to him.... too bad that another "buford situation" ( find another one advertised needing a place, that is already a little older) didn't pop up, so he could have some company now, and then a new puppy down the road to train too... you were down to 2 dogs and really needing 3....

I think of him all by himself and not understanding the "why".... My DS is taking his aussie with him to the farm a bunch more now that she doesn't have spirit to "babysit" with at DS house all the time... but she is lonely too even if he didn't play near as much....

Yesterday evening I went in to take a shower to get ready for church. Layne was working on his 1989 truck, sheep were all fed and put up for the night. Layne heard Buford going BOOF BOOF BOOF. Not a loud bark, just boofing, that is what gave Buford his name. It morfed from Boofer to Buford. Layne said do it right and call him Buford T. Justice and that is his registered name.

Anyway, Layne would talk to Buford, then stick his head back under the hood. BOOF BOOF BOOF. Clearly Buford wanted Layne's attention, Layne talked to him some more, kept working on the truck, he was running a new wire, threading it through and putting it in the split loom with other wires. BOOF BOOF BOOF. This went back and forth several more times and finally Layne went through the gate and over the hog panel and petted Buford. He kept up a conversation with Buford, What do you want? What do you see? You got something to show me? Then he hit on it when he said Do you want to go to WORK? At those words, Buford exploded with excitement, running halfway to the gate to the night pen, back to Layne, halfway to the night pen, back to Layne. Layne went to the gate, opened it and Buford ran in to be with his sheep for the night.

Gotta love Buford!

A few days ago I turned out the bottle babies Tinkerbelle, Mabeline and Avon on the middle field. They were weaned and ready to join the rest of the lambs. They ran and played just for the joy of running. I started walking them to the other lambs far out in the field and Buford saw us. He came trotting up to investigate.

Buford sniffed the little girls like he was welcoming them to the big world. Then he led them to the lamb flock and watched over them.
