I took Buford to Houston 2 days ago for yet another failed attempt of collecting semen for Artificial Insemination. It was raining when I got him out of the field and put him in the car. I got wet. The sheet I put over the seat hit the floor rather quickly. I had to run the AC for Buford. I was damp and cold. At the vet clinic, Buford clearly said no. Nope, not happening. So we went outside to see if the surroundings might help. Nope. I got wet again. They had cotton swabs of female in heat and he turned his nose, didn't even sniff. With no real live female in heat, it just wasn't going to happen. Drove home, rained al the way. Ran the AC for Buford. I was cold, tired and want the magic formula for getting a dog to to get excited about humping a fist holding a plastic bag.
Since Buford got all excited and humped the mother of his puppies and didn't care if it was really a fist (mine) holding a plastic bag. (things i do for my dog--getting an education here) He was collected and she was inseminated and had 9 puppies.
I called
@Ridgetop and told her about his refusal to be collected. I asked if we can use one of her females when she goes into heat, for the mounting dummy, in order to get Buford collected and semen in the tank. Of course she said yes. It is important to get his genetics collected for shipping to another state or to preserve his semen in case something happens to him.
The vet clinic gave me a kit, styrofoam packed, with tubes, other interesting things and a styrofoam top, then an ice block, to rush the semen specimen to their clinic where it can be professionally handled and put in the tank. Gheesh.
Or maybe we will take both dogs to the clinic and get Buford collected, I don't know.
