Tuesday we went back to the park, walked a couple different nature trails. Caleb met a couple BIG Doodle/poodles on leads, cautiously sniffed noses with one. Good. Then he saw an older man walking his dog, let him go by, then saw an older lady with her elderly Lab. She and I talked for a minute at a distance. Caleb was interested, but not acting up. Good.

Wednesday we skipped the park, but I took Caleb out in the yard, releasing him for a run once I checked for cats. After his run I clipped his leash to the cattle panels so I could check for eggs...not good.

Another leash bit the dust. I vowed no more using a leash to tie him out, even briefly. I bought that leash around 2009, can't find another like it. All the new leashes are slick, have sharp edges, and are uncomfortable when wrapped around my hand. I have one more old leash, soft but strong, a cotton blend perhaps?

In the evening Caleb and Debbie met in the hallway. It was good for about a minute, but when Caleb moved forward Debbie went into the bathroom, where I heard the most ferocious growls and warning noises. Caleb was just outside the bathroom, in bowing play position, not looking aggressive. He barked, and I removed him for Debbie's relief.

I actually believe there's been progress.

Thursday
I took Caleb for a walk at the park.

After completing the trail I walked him through the playground, and the picnic shelter. He was a little anxious but relaxed quickly. On the way home I topped off the gas tank, stopped at a drive thru for a BBQ sandwich, all new experiences for him.

He's crashed out in his crate, but a good tired I think.

And look what was waiting for me when I got home!

NOW I can tie out Caleb without endangering another leash. The 2' length (on top) is for riding in the car, the 5' is for briefly attaching him in the yard, and the 10' is for the actual yard stake. They were closeouts, excellent prices, so I grabbed them before they were sold out.

I think I need a nap...

If you would like, you can send me your old leashes and I'll see if I can sew them back together for you. I have a heavy duty sewing machine.

I think the dog/dogs were back this evening.
:barnie
Caleb indicated that he needed to go out, and after exiting the door he started growling and pre-barking on the top step. He was staring at the neighbors across the street, who were outside talking to someone in their yard, so I told him to stop it. I thought it was visitors at the neighbors, but after getting to the side yard by the woods Caleb became excited, started casting back and forth. I thought "raccoon" but then Caleb started barking furiously back at our cars in the driveway.

My headlamp caught part of a dog in its beam, brown and shepherd markings. But it turned and ran away, and down the street. I thought there was a second dog, but I couldn't swear to it. I would guess it was at least the big brown dog, but if so, why did it run?

Caleb got a new stuffed toy to help him unwind, and it's already gutted on the floor.

AH HA !!! Dogs are so good at "seeing" things we can not - both sight - esp at night and then always the scent.
As I say to my detection students - the nose knows Good boy Caleb and WTG @fuzzi -- see and believe!

And it running away from Caleb?
:caf

I'm wondering if taking him for walks and rides, experiencing new places, new people, new dogs, has given Caleb more confidence, to chase off the loose dog?

Well, he as a yard and more importantly his own person that he loves and needs to protect now! 💗
