Caleb's Chronicles

Yeah - I'm with the foster, the vet visit being the source of the current issue. Something you wouldn't know until you "hit on the area they did". Makes sense as the "new" thing is to give shots/vaccinations in the legs. Yeah. I was told that if cancer strikes because of repeated vaccinations they can take the leg off.:somad.
You'll get through this - it's not a set back as it came from the damn vet or vet tech.

Frolicking

Saturday we had a good walk around the park, with lots of children playing soccer, and their parents watching. Lots of dogs with the soccer parents, none loose.

Sunday was a slower day, and we didn't go for any long walk as I've not been feeling up to much activity, probably due to allergies. Caleb was very reactive, though he did seem content for a while watching me do some pruning outside.

Today we hit the sweet spot, a ride to mail a package, then over to the park. I did see people walking and jogging, but NO DOGS! We did some 20' long leash exploring in the empty soccer fields, and practiced recall as well. Then we walked nature trails, heading home after about 45 minutes.

Once home, he crashed.

Caleb still acted bratty about 5pm, but not too reactive. I think his long nap helped him later with self control.

He might have to deal with an abbreviated walk tomorrow, as I'm taking my SUV in for an oil leak, probably a gasket. Just fix it, I want to travel!

Felt awful, ran a fever on Tuesday, and then felt fatigued Wednesday and Thursday, so Caleb didn't get his outings, just walks with the help of family. AND CALEB DID WELL!

He's been sniffing noses with Debbie, but then irritates her by trying to sniff under her tail. :D =D

He sniffed Wisp, the bravest feral, that was a first!

And he's had the run of the house most of the day. It's exhausting...

Thunderstorms rolled through about 3pm.

I put a drop of lavender essential oil on Caleb's collar prior to the first rumble.

"It's raining, hard..."

Then, a big boom. And Caleb went behind my chair for the duration.

But there was no pacing, no whining, no pawing or attempts to get in my lap. I didn't slide on his ear protection, as he handled his anxiety so well on his own.

Storms round two is expected in about an hour. I think I will utilize the ear gear this time, as the second wave of thunderstorms is supposed to be worse, and longer. And Caleb's already primed, poor pup.

I'm very proud of him.

I hope you are feeling better today!
Thank you. Kidney stones hit again last night, residual pain today. I have sent a message to my urologist in case she wants to see me, do some tests.

Caleb was in his crate early, before the storms hit, as I had to lie down. No ear muff, and no barking noise, though I'm not sure if there was any thunder.

Catching up...I wound up going to my PCP as I was running a fever over 102° and wanted a diagnosis confirmation and antibiotics prescription. Yes, kidney infection, and for several days it was all I could do to check the coops for eggs, top off feed and water. Caleb got yard walks by DS and DF, though I didn't encourage DF as he's going to be 77 and has balance issues.

So, of course Caleb built up his energy for when I was feeling better. We did a street walk daily except Sunday, but he needed more. This morning was our first ride in over a week. He was antsy in the car, but settled down.

I made a quick stop at Harris Teeter to pick up meds for DF, and then I felt something that had been missing for a couple weeks: hunger.

I stopped at Bojangles for some Bo-berry biscuits. I parked, waited until Caleb composed himself, then took out a hot, fresh blueberry biscuit. Suddenly Caleb's training snapped into place, and he sat and waited for me to share.

I debated about going to the park, would it be too much stimulation for an antsy dog? I decided a leisurely walk around the front with stops to just sit and relax might work. It did.

Once home I put Caleb on his cable so I could check the chickens.

After eating a late breakfast Caleb collapsed.

He's definitely more relaxed, currently lying at my feet. I'm going to try to mow a little, may take him outside to watch.

Did another park walk on Tuesday. Heading down the path we were confronted by a snarling, snapping small poodle, whose elderly owner was being dragged along, seemed unable to cope.

Afterwards I took Caleb for a long walk across the soccer fields, letting him explore on the long lead (20'). He did calm down, observed other dogs 20'-30' away. The dogs' owners related their dogs have had similar anxiety issues after being attacked by loose dogs.

Sounds like an epidemic of inconsideration.

Today I skipped the park, took Caleb to Aldi's. He's gotten yappy when I leave him, so disappearing for 15 minutes was part of his training. Then we walked around the Wawa parking lot next door, which didn't bother him, he was pretty relaxed. However, we both jumped when a propane tank vending machine started talking as we walked by!

I made one more stop, leaving Caleb for about 10 minutes. By that time it was up in the 80s, and I didn't want him to get hot, so I headed home.

I had banking errands that required going into the building, so I left Caleb home with DF, and a box.

He had a great time destroying that box. It was one of those heavily built produce containers, and Caleb shredded it, as you can see.

He's resting now...it was a good day.

Oh, and Caleb's been almost perfect with the feral cats, and that despite their taunting.
