Caleb's Chronicles

Update

Caleb has developed bad habits in the car, yipping when I leave him. More work to be done, he's better than that. Not sure why he regressed.

On Saturday we did the farmers' market, then I took him to the park. As soon as I parked my car a young lady walked by, being dragged by a husky on a retractable leash! I sat, waited. Once they were gone I got Caleb out, and saw two young ladies walking two huskies on long leads, no control. I gave up on the woods walk, took Caleb to the paved path around the pond. We did a relaxed circuit, then came home.

Sunday was a no good, very bad "I'm not listening" day. So we did some yard and street walks since Caleb was having issues.

Baby steps...

This morning, Monday, I made my coffee, checked the chicks, fed the cats, then took Caleb for a ride to the park. His listening ears weren't on while we walked the nature trail, but we worked on it. His sit at heel when recalled or when I stop walking is very good, consistent. Most of the time he sits and waits when I am going up or down stairs, and does not lunge at the feral cats the majority of the time.

And he met Debbie coming down the hall, and they sniffed noses. THAT is a big step.

He seems to enjoy being outside on his cable, even if I'm doing work on the opposite side of the yard.

This morning we did a half mile park walk, almost twice. There were a lot of dogs being walked, and I was balancing Caleb seeing the dogs without being too close and having him react. He did well, looked at other dogs 30' away, then relaxed and started sniffing the ground. His return to heel is really good, so I started using the word "heel" with his action.

He was very non-reactive with the feral cats.
:yesss:

Caleb has started enjoying playing fetch while on his cable, sometimes with a disk, but more so with a rubber ball. His drop is improving, too.

I think I wore him out.

Took Caleb to the park in my Accord. It was first time for him in that vehicle, and he had only a slight hesitation to get in the back seat. While walking we saw the groundskeepers doing their noisy mowing/trimming things, only minor interest from Caleb. We saw dogs being walked about 40' away. Caleb showed interest but no anxiety.

Caleb did show a little anxiety after we got home, mouthing my hand for example, but after I had breakfast I took him outside. He watched me trim the front slope, and was back to calm less than an hour later.

"Squirrel!"

Is the fact that he used to be called Ducky as laughable to everyone else as it is to me? Caleb suits him much better!
Thank you.

I get it, the shelters and resues have to come up with names. Since he was turned in wearing dog pajamas with a yellow duck pattern it probably was an easy choice.

I like Caleb, too.
