Can I wait to breed once then wether my buck?

I have an 8 week old Alpine buckling that is already outgrown other kids born a month earlier. I want to eventually wether him & use him as a pack goat, I think he will be a good size boy. I would like to breed him once to my does to hopefully get some more larger future pack goats. Is there any problem with waiting to breed them once & then wethering them? I would either burzizzo him or have the vet do it surgically.

The simple answer is yes. The more complicated question would be is he going to breed other does that are presently around his age? If so, he will need to be separated from them in order for them to not become pregnant before they are of an appropriate age. If you do separate him, will he have a companion? Solitary bucks are lonely and should have a companion wether to keep them company.

If he's going to breed mature does and they are able to be bred any time, then he could run with the herd and will breed the does when he is able, which isn't that far away.

I did what you are asking. I used my buck to breed my does and then he was wethered. He was about 14 months of age and was done surgically by a vet. Everything worked out perfectly and he lives here with all the does and their daughters.

Thanks for the info. He would only be breeding last years does, not any his age. I sold his sister & mom. He would be in the heard with two wethers his age, the two one year old does & one 4 year old doe, our milk doe.

Question, if you breed him once and then castrate, will he still think his a buck with the peeing on himself and so on? I ask because this might be something I might consider but I would want to re home him after as a pet.

My buck never did pee on his face so I can't honestly answer that for you. I will say he did try to breed the does when they came back into season, but eventually gave up on that. He was a sweet buck and now he's a sweeter wether.
