A REAL issue is goats ... Jump in & on things. Clear 4' like a deer. Think hay is bedding, once they're full. Plus most of mine have horns, so need to be aware of that with fence surrounding, etc. They're not small, either. Some of these are 200# easy. So my waste probably greater than the more docile sheep.

But it is being considered....plus handling "things" that may end up more costly than any "saving" on hay.

Here a round is 1,400lb+ a square 65lbs. Feed store squares are $10 and up for a 45# bale. Rounds from $45-$90. That's about 22 heavy squares in a 1,400# round. Or $160-$250 in the same weight. Put the bale outside of the pen and feed by hand the same as you already do. If they eat half, waste half your still money ahead. Then you can use a lot of waste as mulch or in the muddy path ways to keep your feet a little cleaner.
It's easier to peel away at it if you can have someone place it on it's end and you unroll it.

My son was in a much better mood yesterday evening and we got a lot done together on the computer front. He decided to give me a different computer that he had. It's 5 times faster than mine (and my computer was not slow) and it has a Terabyte of storage, plus our computers are always connected to his private server and another hard drive for backups. He's going to set my old computer up as our own AI data base, which will be pretty cool. He was downloading different packages last night and we played around with it a bit. We're not going to use windows anymore. Windows 11 is the same as 10, except there are more ways for them to track you. It's actually quite evil.

Hubs is playing in the first golf tournament of the season and I'm living my same daily life at home...lol We will be going to Moses Lake for his dad's birthday today. It's early, but it's when more people could be here.

Have a lovely day everyone! 💗🐝🌸🌺🌻☀️

We're having a cold spell - high today will be 88. 🥶 (maybe I should dig out a barn coat?)
DH is using my computer to get his things done. The hard drive on his computer that died is solid state - all that was on it is lost. There are some backed up files so there's at least a little something.
The MFPs (Master Food Preservers)are doing a demo today on preserved lemons. I'm going to go down the hill to see it. We have lots of lemons, and a lot get tossed. Yes, even with freezing the juice, making an awesome lemon loaf (recipe makes 2 and freezes well), lemonade, etc. Might as well have yet another way to preserve them. Not to mention preserved lemons seem to be the hot item of the moment in cooking. Will probably check out a little shopping (if I'm not too peopled out) while I'm down there.
Have a good one everyone.

So, I have fed by hand from a roll in the past.

HERE you're lucky if around bale is 600#. If larger, it's from out west & $150-250, depends on grass type. Another issue is MOST bales now are in the 45-50# range and costing $13.50-$15., plus are "rebaled"....and it falls apart, loss of well defined pads. 😖

There is a dealer with normally quality hay, tested and sold by weight. Those bales can be 70- 110#, depending on where it comes from...and it's in the range of 35-45 cent per pd, depending on type grasses. Add that up! I use 150-175# a day fall- winter ( more in winter extremes), plus grain!!

Not living in an area that has local hay available is a challenge

There is a guy raising & baling right on my road 🤫 But HE IS a challenge to buy from. Personality. Doesn't want small orders, etc. But this year he has replanted about 20 AC with a type of legume. I'm thinking I might have to have a talk. Maybe his son, instead! They work it together

Coffee is ready. Going to ride along to pick up 10 round bales of hay this morning. Opportunity knocks, drought is being predicted and I'm getting ahead of the crowd. Layne will do all the work, but I get to get out of the house.

@RR Homestead throw salt on the slugs, they will melt. I hate those nasty things.
You should see the pile of salt right now with dead bodies scattered through it. :lol:It's the only revenge I could get for snotting up my walls and screens.

Would love to know what you learned for preserving lemons. I have a box of them waiting as we speak and my friend has a ton more on her tree. I usually just use the juice and freeze dry the rest for later.
