I got in touch with one gal locally, who has a contract (along with two other ladies) with one of the 3 Costco's here, to pick up their produce discards. She gets their throwaways 2x a week, while another gal does 2x a week and one gal does once a week. They each get a full pallet of fruits and veggies each time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All three are small ranchers. The food is fed to their herds. This gal has sheep, two mama cows and one baby, piglets coming in next week, chickens, turkeys, ducks. When she offered some bags of onions and potatoes on the local Give and Receive page, nobody contacted her. So on the second day, I reached out and asked if I could come get them for the food bank. SURE, she said. Well, a connection and barter was created.

She's 36 with three little kids and I'm a 70 yr old. But I LOVED talking to her. She does sooooo much there on their land up at 1,000 ft elevation. What we've agreed to do, is when she gets good food fit for human consumption, she will message me. I'll drive up there, take the cases of food, and in exchange, I'll load up our truck with her cardboard cases to take to the transfer station recycling center in Vancouver.

Yesterday, I got 7 cases of food - red onions, two cases of bagged chopped up cauliflower, three cases of red grapes, a sleeve of portabellas, lemons, and cuties. I loaded this up in the back seat of the truck. Then I gathered up 26 cases of the cardboard and scooped up about a trash bag of rotting produce. I drove down the hill, went to the food bank to drop off the produce, and then to the transfer station to dump the cardboard. The rotten produce went into my compost.

Two weeks ago she found out that she cannot give her Jersey mama too much fruit. The poor cow became sluggish, she drenched her with something, and called the vet. The vet said NO MORE FRUIT for the Jersey or the Dexter. Oh, the Dexter is due to calve in about a week or so. The Jersey has a three week old wee little thing. Also she said she needs to put some weight on the Jersey, who is very thin. She was considering some Coconut oil.

Another small farmer who lives about 1.25 miles from me, also wants me to do the same with her. I'm very happy to source food for the food bank in exchange for hauling cardboard. What I don't want to know is how much the food bank will throw away 'cus they are toooooo damn picky.

Woke to heavy fog before dawn, fed dogs headed out to train Sage. Fog turned to drizzle, won't amount to much other than keeping the ground from drying out - a good thing. But too wet to weed whack when I got back. Sheep are out (Sage helps - baby steps in herding), and hurray second day in a row the chickens didn't use the nest boxes for bedrooms. They finally figured out there is a high perch in their Fort Knox run. Fingers crossed it they keep that up!

Up early, then coffee. Abour 9am headed out with DS to refer him to the new credit union I just joined. We each get $25 for the referral.

The credit union I was a member of for 25 years was sold to a Federal CU, and the transfer of all accounts was supposed to be handled over last weekend and Monday. X is blowing up with complaints. It's a mess, people can't access their money, no one at the CU is answering the phones or emails or internet queries. I'm glad I anticipated this sort of situation, moved some money before the SHTF.

This afternoon I worked on the second hoop coop's door, and did some snake-proofing, too. A hot shower is looking good right now.

Coffee is so welcome today!! Slept well, thanks to a glass of wine -- yeah, cheap drunk 🙂 one glass. But was so sleep deprived for 2 days, didn't take much.

My incubator of eggs is hatching 🐣 👍 Been couple yrs since doing this. Nervous wreck. Thermostat & operator error added to it but, got it right & have chicks vice hard boiled eggs. :clap not yet 24 hr since first one popped out. Will update tomorrow.

Hoping for a relaxing day. Need to make cheese, bread & can some pineapple, cut up a watermelon, do some laundry. All work but, still relaxing in its own way....satisfaction at least. Farm day, not job day.

June gloom fog here - that's fine with me. Going to spend the day big puttering around the barn and the ranch - lots of big, medium and small things that are on the list. And getting ready for my brother and hopefully nephew (has jury duty - hopefully the call in will say don't need you) to fly in on Monday to pick up his lamb. Monday will be busy even before he/they get here - more on that on Monday. ;)
