Sold a holstein steer today. Didn't do well on him. Perfect storm for a low price. Not real happy. Started with him not getting in until the end of the sale. Most buyers were done by then. Next they changed auctioneers to a little gal who want's to be big time but is just annoying and I can't even hear her let alone understand what she's saying. Then she didn't see our normal buyer bidding. On top of it I got razzed for not lancing his neck where a couple folks thought he had an abscess under his jaw line. It's not an abscess. It's fat. He's had it since he was little and I did check it. So he got docked for what they thought was an abscess. :he:he:he As if I have ever brought a sick or injured animal to that auction in over 30 years. So this one didn't even pay his own bill let alone feed bill for the cow. Super quiet here now that the screamer is gone.
Went to the PO today and was able to verify we are who we say we are. So silly but whatever. Mail should now be forwarded here for the next 6 months. One less worry. Going to try and call the local PO and verify everything but they close super early so it's going to be a challenge. DH is going to install a locking mailbox when he's there so if anything is delivered it's safe until we get there with another load. He's also going to put up camera's and internet. That will all help me stress less.
Tomorrow I need to go get more pellet stove pellets. Not going to get a full load this time. Hoping we won't be here that long. Wishful thinking but that's what we are telling ourselves. 😂
Time to go finish cleaning the milker and feeding.
Hope y'all had a good day! :hugs

If you were there and she was not picking up on a buyer that is bidding.,... YOU HOLLER OUT and point to the bidder...
I am sorry he did not do well.... You could have no-saled him and sold direct to the normal calf buyer after...

Well, sorry,,,, it's done and he is gone... I think you will find a more market friendly atmosphere in MO.... Hopefully....

Thanks. I thought he was who was getting the bid. So did he. Turned out to be the buyer behind him. A buyer had I known was bidding I would have passed him out and brought him home no matter the price. Even at a loss. This buyer is not a buyer I want our stock to go to even if I didn't like the steer. It's one of those situations that really churns my stomach. I don't wish his fate on anyone.
I hope MO is different all the way around. I really hope we can exclusively private sale again. Time will tell.

No doubt cattle prices are up! I haven't bought cattle since a weaner was a couple hundred. Yep, been a few years. And back to my milk cow crave, I couldn't justify the cost of an extra calf to use the milk. By the time it grew to sale size, prices might drop. Oh, well....I'll just keep the dairy goats

I have noticed that a local who had always kept a small Angus herd...like 10-12 head, now has only 2. Guessing he cashed in. Good for him 😊

Up too early again but, it is what it is. Gonna be cooler today. So today's high is now. But swinging into our normal winter of high 30s to mid 40 days. The weather people are saying that a cold blast is coming, usually does. Just no snow please!

Gonna get out there at daylight & check on the new twins from last night. And rear end check the other bagged up girl. 🤷 Refill hay racks....they still had feed at 11pm. I swear, bottomless pits they are! Will give pellets this morning. I have a couple I'd like to preg check. Still have a few urine test strips. Need to do a couple hoof trims this week. 🤔 I see some goat wrangling happening.

Coffee is ready. Up at 4, fed lambs, cleaned dog crate, it’s a mess from overnight. It’s a pee conspiracy. Toss in tiny lamb poops, step in it and make it an icky mess for mom.
Got 2 more bottle babies, the ewe died yesterday from worms. I’d already wormed her twice. It’s supposed to be winter, 🥶 but nobody notified the worms. Lambs are 3 weeks old, I’m leaving them in a jug and taking bottles to them. More for me to do.

I saw a picture on facebook of a cabin after a bear broke in and tore it up. I’m my post, I asked if I could borrow the bear to clean things up in here. 😁

Worms 🤬. The bane of our existence! Sorry to hear. I've lost some from that, like others have. No matter our consistent efforts it happens :hugs

Borrow the bear?. Well you could push it over with the tractor instead. BUT !!! I know you'll want to "salvage" any board you can (me too!) for later use.

We must be only ones up when we should be asleep 😵‍💫

Slight breeze today at 60 plus mph winds, it's mid January and I'm about to fire the machinery up to put rock down, WTF? There is a few spots on my road that are bad that didn't get addressed before since a rich neighbor who is trying to sell out was paying for the rock and I was doing the labor for free. Speaking of which, the place still hasn't sold in 7 months.

If a neighbor wants to chip in and help maintain the road I live on, I'm all for splitting the costs. Now it seems I am all alone again in that regard. I will fix half of the loop that goes to my house and stop right before the arsehole neighbor so they don't benefit.
