Good evening all!
God is so good to us. We've been stressing (more me than DH) to the max over the house being empty through this ice/snow storm. I tried today to find someone out there that could go check on things afterwards but not having a key is a clear problem. Contacted the realtor who does still have a key and he said he'd go out there after the store and check on any damage. He can't get into the basement though but at least he could check the house. Tonight I get a text from the previous owners and come to find out they are back in town until after the storm is over. Have been there a few day and already had gone to the house and got it prepared for the storm. I have no words for how much relief I/we feel. They are going to go back over after the storm and shut off the dripping faucets and turn the heater back down a bit. Check everything and be sure it's all good. We feel so blessed. We will be sending them a thank you card and probably a couple shirts once I get my machines set back up again. They loved the shirts I had on the trip there. I think our plan is to have them turn off the well and drain all the lines. Shut off the ice machine in the fridge also. Then we won't have to be as worried about blown pipes between now and when DH makes it out. DH is working on his truck and the trailer he's taking and hopefully getting that finished tonight. Then we'll make a dump run to test it all out. Be sure everything is good to go.
Started out today with sick calves. 2 of the 3 suddenly went down hard. Treated them but got zero noticeable response so reached out to our friends. They have a couple down right now too with the same symptoms. Picked up some more powder that really helps plug em' up and a couple other supplies. They are already ordering more for them so asked them to add one for me so I'll be stocked up for a long time. Within 4 hours both down calves were up and walking around. One is improving quite a bit (wasn't quite as bad) the other is still not out of the woods yet but is improving. Couple more tube feedings for both while withholding milk and SQ fluids for the weakest. Then hopefully they hopefully can resume nursing again. Since two calves are not nursing I milked and put away a gallon of cream. Will make butter out of it tomorrow.
Got tires taken care of today. One old set balanced. Still will need to buy a new set but DH wants to wait until he knows all the new suspension parts are good to go that he just replaced. No point in wearing out new tires if everything isn't fixed that needs fixin'. Also picked up the new set we ordered for his commuter. Now he can start driving that again. That should save some fuel money.
Think that's about it for the moment. Still have chores to do and milking equipment to finish washing up. DH just came in and asked for help so I guess that's first.

Well.... I vote that you buy so that the first week you eat lots of GREENS and whatever veggies you like. Also, start growing sprouts on your window sill. You need green stuff.
A large container of Greek Vanilla yogurt will stay good for 2 weeks. Eat that once a day mixed with granola.
Apples easily last a month. Also, the hard pears will last. And carrots, they can last a month (but watch them), definitely 2 weeks or more.
After the one week of greens, 2 weeks of dairy...
week 3 and 4, the sprouts you are now growing... start eating those, and...
Frozen fruit is good, you can get milk powder or a fancy protein drink powder (I would vote for the more health food versions full of good stuff that you can pronounce), and then start doing fruit smoothies with the frozen fruit, powder (milk powder or protein powder) and some water.
For high protein eat and go (note the yogurt with granola counts, as does the fruit smoothie with protein) how about you add canned tuna. Tuna can be turned into a bunch of different kinds of meals.
Also... I hate to say it... but there is spam. Buy bread, the bread stays in the freezer. When you want bread, toast the slices and make a sandwich with fried spam. Add some homegrown sprouts and it will not kill you. Some lunch meats will also last a long time... because those are also a bit scary.
I love Jimmie Dean Sausage. You can freeze it, and when you want to use it, fry it up in the pan still frozen (keep rotating it and scraping off the cooked bits).
The cooked Jimmy Dean with a couple of cans of tomatoes and noodles is a good one skillet meal. Or mix the Jimmy Dean and a can of corn into cornbread batter and cook in a big cast iron.

Cold here. Yes!! 22 with wind chill, 7* out there. Better than zero predicted but, not but by much. You guys who live with this are nut cases

Different sorts of beans, rice, potatoes, flour to make gravy or the sorts, egg noodles, yeast, and a ton of seasonings. Grab some cast iron and a whole cow to stick in the freezer, hell grab a rifle and go shoot some animals then your once a month trip to grocery store can be every few months.
Same temperatures as yesterday today except we will go from -15°F to 20°F, I bet we only make 15° above zero.

We are not supposed to get out of the teens today either... BUT, this is alot more traumatic for this area than your temps out there just being a normal part of winter....

Actually warmer than usual for winter here. Though I understand and will speak for advice on animals, all animals will be fine in your weather, only newborns I would worry about and pets.
Might be colder than one is use to there, but it will more of uncomfortable than dangerous, limited exposure helps.
