Temps crashed about 90 minutes ago. 35 to 25 degrees, oddly no wind just suddenly colder. Sheep in barn with hay and water. Ghost became one but that was expected and she didn’t have any distress. Maremmas apparently slept outside in spite of snug, dry doghouses. Leading horses to water I guess. They had a good breakfast. Have to watch the well house and bottle lamb space heaters. Roads have begun to freeze. We’re as ready as we can be.
Sorry about Ghost.

Sorry about Ghost.
She was an old ewe. I’d been feeding her ground corn, cabbage, better hay and other things because her teeth were mostly gone. She hadn’t lambed in three years. I suppose the sensible thing from a business standpoint would have been to sell her years earlier or shoot her but she wasn’t suffering and didn’t eat much kibble or corn. She had nice lambs and trained pups in her day. The bad mommy ewe really stepped up, has pretty twins. I have yet to see them nurse 🤣. Two ewes left to lamb.

Good afternoon all!
Great morning (well morning for me) so far. Both calves put up a good fight this morning at tubing time. 1 calf acts 100% back to normal. The littlest is a little off still but both are screaming for food. Yay! Also got a text that the dairy had another bull calf if I wanted it. I decided to say yes. With the one I was going to graft onto the heifer currently recovering and already been on our cow for a bit it makes more sense to just get the new one that will be closer in age to our heifers. Not to mention a milk change would be bad for the recovering sick calf right now. So hopefully this is a win win. Heifer is clearly working on labor. Not in active labor yet but she's working on it. COME ON BULL CALF!!!!! DH is home today/tonight. If it's a heifer I'm in big trouble. No way he won't see it. I'm currently sitting enjoying coffee listening to the weather live stream watching the heifer waddling around the calving pasture. Already put the other pregnant heifer out to a different pasture so we don't have any stealing issues. I've found a padded room (pasture) is about what I need to keep jerseys from doing awful things. So here I sit anxiously awaiting the new calf. Praying it's a bull. I'll need to get freshened up a bit and go get the new graft bull calf soon so he's here when she calves.
Nothing else exciting here at the moment. Currently 64* outside. Finally a clear day with no fog at the moment.
Y'all have a great afternoon and stay warm and safe! :hugs

Right!?! I think I need them all. Who knew I'd want a toy after all these years over adulting! Ok to be honest I've always wanted a truck and stock trailer toy as well as a cattle hauler semi toy.

That looks so delicious!!!
It is. I've had three slices so far, with butter. Fresh bread is so yummy.

You are taught to hate the wolf because he threatens the shepherd, but ask yourself: Who eats more sheep?
The wolf is dangerous, yes, but he is free, his moral choices are his own.
And that is why the shepherd fears the wolf.
I don’t hate the wolf. I just don’t want to feed it. That’s how I’ve felt about all predators.

@RR Homestead ...uhhh 64*??....great for calving. And it would be great for here, instead of this cold from hell that's going on! But happy for you 😁

Nothing new here. Just came in from night check on everyone -- given the weather temps. Kids are inside curled up out of way of others 🤞so it seems.
Everyone has shelter, feed & has water open for now. Prepped all I can for morn. Supposed to see snow about 10ish. It's 12* with wind chill. More than cold enough!
