Lovely start. Warm 42 out...going to upper 60s. Sunny.

Brought in a load of hay yesterday. Got that in trailer and goats liked it. Good. Today not pushing anything to get done, relax maybe with a slow day. I'll walk around to do "blow ins" from winds earlier in week, now that the rains have cleared. Then a run to the dump to dispose of whatever...mostly bags, etc. have a pile of feed bags to go, too. Lazy day

Clear, humid, 50° but supposed to get up into 70's. I'm hoping to do some yard work after church. I've noticed several privet sprouting where I walk on the southside of the property, time to take the shears to them.

Finished my coffee, slept through the alarm for 2 hours. Guess I was tired. Took 8 older percentage ewes to auction yesterday, 3 hours away. I said goodbye to old friends. Sometimes that’s what you have to do.

@RR Homestead you can’t go forward if you are holding on to things that no longer work for you. I’m deeply sorry about losing the calf and I’m glad y’all are dealing with the reality of she no longer fits the future.

I have some dealing with reality to do myself. I still have 3 more on the sell list. The white Dorpers are also selling, they are spoken for.

I can’t hang onto the past, I have to make room for the future.

Good morning all. Wow did I sleep late. Yesterday was busy and today will be all about starting seeds (late!) and cooking a big batch of dog food. I’m still feeding kibble but I want to decrease it in favor of a more balanced supplement. It may be my imagination but the dogs seem hungrier these days. Knowing how corporations cut corners I wonder if kibble ingredients have been shuffled or eliminated. Garden wise I just priced tomato plants. Smallest plants were $5.99 a piece. I’m pretty good at starting seedlings and end up with more that I can plant. Wish I could share the with you all. Off to chores!

It may be my imagination but the dogs seem hungrier these days. Knowing how corporations cut corners I wonder if kibble ingredients have been shuffled or eliminated.

Ya' know - I've had to up the amount of kibble on my dogs. They were losing weight. Especially Ree - she was down 8 lbs and I didn't even know it. took her to wellness check "meet the new vet" - all was good except her weight. New vet thought she was fine - I gasped. All her fuzziness hid the loss. I've switched to a younger version of the kibble and she's putting weight back on slowly. I'm feeding Science Diet. The puppy, Sage is fine but I've got her on their puppy kibble. I keep pups on that to around 18-24 mos (not the suggested 12).

Morning all! Hubs turned on our irrigation this morning... let the mowing begin...lol We have to water every day in the summer. If we didn't, we'd be back to sand and sagebrush.

@Blue Sky I started tomato seeds on the 23rd, so I'm also late. Most of them have sprouted, so hopefully we'll get tomatoes off of them before summer is over. Hope yours come up good.

Smallest plants were $5.99 a piece.

It's a crime!! I feel the same way -- start them at home! I mean I have seed for every type, if some don't germinate, ok....still get more than I need to plant. An entire pack of seed is same or less than cost of one plant. Some people don't have time/place to start them but I do. In fact, I hope to plant a lot of these older seed this yr. Grow or not, need to reduce supply

Uhhh, need to get the garden tilled soon
But pots/seed/starter fill, I'm loaded. Barn clean out time for garden use. I love springtime but, harvest is best.

Seeds are started. The difference in the amount of seeds in packets from pre Covid and today are appalling. Not to mention the prices. Fewer varieties and lower overall selection. I remember Walmart carrying a lot more plants, grapes, black and blue berries. Not these days where I am. Hubbs has saved us a small fortune by dividing elephant ear plants. Frosty the bottle lamb is getting pasture time but still doesn’t realize she’s a sheep. She’s been a good trainer for Vala and a barometer for Moses’ attitude towards lambs. He’s back to guarding and we’ve had no problems.

I'm glad your husband came around on the cow, sad that she has to go.

My husband likes to burn big piles. One time, I told him if the fire department showed up, I was going in the house and he would be on his own.

When he started cutting down our 80' poplar trees, he realized we should probably get a permit. We also dug a huge pit to burn them in. We've burned twice, it's full again and we have more to add to it.

I think emotions are at a high right now for both of us. That's not helping things. It was a bad day all the way around.
That would totally be me. That's what MIL did when FIL got a visit. Walked right into the house and let him face the music. Granted it really wasn't an excessive size pile but it wasn't 10 x 10. The funny thing is usually I can take the bucket and make the pile 10 x 10 ish by smashing everything down with the bucket. Most of the pile is from AIL (FIL's sister) anyways. Honestly if I could I would take a ticket at this point to burn the berry bushes and their out of control bamboo they thought years ago would be a good idea to plant in the ground. Especially at a fence line. Bamboo is awful and it would tickle me pink to light it on fire and watch it burn. I'd only have to fix that fence one more time if it burned up.

Sounds like you needed the sleep. Sorry about letting the old ewes go. I know how you feel. In prep for our move we sold the majority of our herd. I cried so hard when they sold. They all behaved really well. Everyone at the auction who bought them offered them back to us for free. Surprised me. They didn't know why we were severely thinning the herd. They still don't know we are leaving. It will be hard to say goodbye to a lot of people there. From people I worked with for years to our buyers who always try and buy our stock for top dollar. As you know we have another old one going in a few weeks now. Will be a sad day again. I need to keep telling myself that. Can't hang onto the past. Have to make room for the future. So jealous everyone starting seeds. That's what small unhealthy plants have been here for a long time now. Guess I thought that was normal prices. It's so weird not starting our garden already. I can't remember the last time we didn't have a garden and we won't this year for sure at the new house. Especailly after seeing the 9 does and fawns currently eating the yard and my bushes and trees. I'm actually finding I am having anxiety over not growing our food this year. I think we are ok as I've been stocking up every bit I can for a few years now but we've had a few bad seasons lately. I don't really have inventory currently with it being scattered between two places right now. Guess we'll see if there's farmers markets that are legit farmers markets at home and stock up on anything missing that way for the year. Maybe I can find the amish and get things from them. That's a dream I've had for years.
