Good afternoon all!
The jersey finally calved!!!A beautiful but a bit too large bull calf for a jersey heifer. Helped her just a little bit to have it. It's hot and she was struggling. Didn't want her to get too exhausted or over heated since she's not out on green pasture right now. He's not the sharpest tool in the shed but he's nursed some. I'll milk the back two quarters this evening and put colostrum away for later use. I'll rotate the last one out and use it for us then keep hers for any emergencies we may have. I've moved the two grafts over but not put them in with her yet. It's hot and they nursed the temporary mom not long before moving them over. Hopefully I don't regret the decision and end up with a fight on my hands grafting them. I just got the smaller of the two stabilized and getting stronger as of yesterday. I'm hoping to somehow keep her from relapsing. Not likely to succeed but I'm going to try. The faster everyone gets settled in and healthy the faster I can get on the road.
Just sitting down for the first time since getting up. Having a cold cup of coffee. It's hot outside. About to get over 90* right now. Waiting for the heifer to pass the placenta so I can rub it all over the grafts. I love my life.Going to start preparing for my trip. Making sure we have enough feed for everyone prepped and ready for DH to take care of the critters. I'm feeling excited but trying to keep that contained at the moment as I know what dairy cows/calves have in store for me.
Could be weeks before I can leave. Hopefully not.
Ya'll have a fantastic rest of your day!Time to go check on the new family.
Congrats! Hopefully everything happens like you want and the baby's stay nice and healthy. Moving day is getting closer.
Hopefully he smartens up...lol He's darned cute!

Then let the two grafts in with them and they finished off the 3 quarters. They didn't like my deflecting them on the other quarter but that's her calves colostrum. It's off limits to them for now. Will feed them again later. Trying to get them transitioned as slowly as possible while still getting them grafted on in a timely manner. So far she's doing fantastic. So proud of her. Apparently she's taken me as her calf as well now. I have more cow/calf "parts" in my hair and on my arms from her cleaning me while I milked than I care to admit. Definitely a hair washing night now.
That had to be sweet, messy but sweet.
