Coffee anyone ?

We'll be going through Nebraska too. I want to avoid Denver. Sounds like we'll be traveling the same route. Our son & his family are in NW OK. If I knew when we were passing I'd wave...lol Here's one anyway. :frow

I live an hour from the Tri-Cities. Are you just visiting someone there?
You guys should figure out a lunch stop!

That or what they do to milk in processing even...? So many chems used now, the soils are full. To use no till, some fields are chem sprayed instead, before planting. 😵‍💫 I'd think, if chemicals, you'd react to more than milk. Maybe you do. If so, comparing "those things" might give a hint if more than lactose.

Do the lactose free milks affect you?

Fortunate to not have those concerns for myself but, I'd be sad to not be able to have dairy.
Years ago I tried Lactaid drops. Sometimes they seemed to work.

Happy Resurrection to all of you!

I am a week behind you guys this year... so today was my Palm Sunday. So (actually starting this past Friday, which was the evening prayers for Saturday with the Resurrection of Lazarus), we are doing the 2 church services every day!

I am getting better at it... (since I now lead the choir and organize all the "things")... but whew! Still a bunch of work. Wonderful work, but still work.

Howdy all! :frowHappy resurrection day! He is risen! 🙌
Been a good weekend. It was a refreshing weekend I didn't know we needed. We didn't do much for moving this weekend for the first time in I don't know how long. We moved some cattle around. Did yard work. Doctored the calves and the heifer. Milked. Did some trial cooking both nights. That was nice. Spent some time with DH. Seems we haven't really done that in a while. Not just spending time together without rushing to do things for the move. Didn't realize it until it was happening. Minimal parties which was incredibly refreshing. Almost never happens. Feel a bit refreshed I think. We did some talking about what's next which was nice. We haven't done that in a while either. Mostly trying to figure out a plan for the cattle we are taking. Everyone but 1 jersey is now open. We are 100% AI and that is a challenge right now. I can't be here, heat detect and breed if I'm on the road or at home. Once they are there we won't be set up for a while. Also really haven't decided when is best to get them bred for calving there. I'm thinking we need to wait until around June. Which means I can breed them there but have concerns about the heat and humidity and getting them settled. I'm tossing around trying to buy a bull for one season just so I'm not trying to tackle breeding everyone while trying to finish the move or unpack things. Bulls are expensive and I'm not sure where to get one there that I can trust is calving ease for the jerseys especially. Not to mention selling it once the season is over will I be able to make some of the money back on him. There does seem to be people within a few hours of our property who lease bulls but I've never done that and am really unsure if it's cost effective to do that vs buying a bull and selling after the season. The longer the jerseys are open especially the harder it's going to be to get them settled AI. I don't want them calving nearly as close as they are this season also. Lots of decisions to make.
The 2 graft heifers seem to be on the road to recovery on their fight with scours. The jersey heifers actual calf is still really struggling. Gave him a shot today along with his oral treatments. Sometimes it seems to help. Really need him to get better. The heifers edema has gone down quite a bit more. Still fighting her udder rot. That I such a pain. I keep searching the internet for something that truly clears it up. Not much luck yet. 1 of the 3 spots is now healed. Both other spots are improving but the one is still pretty bad. My make shift get up seems to be working. I took it off today to give her some time to move freely. We'll see if she starts licking her flanks like crazy again. It will go back on if she does. I'm hoping it's good enough now that she will leave them alone for the most part. After the good weekend I'm ready to get on the road and get this move done. Feeling hopeful again. Was getting pretty down with the delays and lack of true progress. I think this next trip will be the change we need. Got a lot to do and get set up there while I'm there. Things closing down here and starting there will be refreshing I think. God is good. I've been reminded it's on his time not mine and there's reasons even if we don't understand them.
Y'all have a blessed rest of your Easter! :hugs

With all that you have going on this year - breeding the cattle would be catch as catch can at best. Chalk it up to the move and once you're home you can start to get back to normal. Guessing it's a 2 yr process to get back to a normal routine esp with the distance and climate change as well. It's a full time job without the move - add the move in which is yet another full time job and that's where you're at now.

I would definitely look into leasing a bull for a 60 or 90 period... get them bred in June/July so the calves come in the spring once you are well settled there...
If the jerseys have calved once already, they should be able to handle most any angus bull... yes a "heifer or easy calving bull" would be a plus... but mine get bred to whomever is in the field once they have calved once.
Buying a bull is going to cost you in the $5-7500 range for a decent one with some sort of "record" as far as easy calving low birth weight or something... I would go with an angus or a lim-flex.... angus limousin cross... limi calves tend to be longer and "lean" as opposed to blocky built front ends. I would NOT do a simmental or a hereford.... both tend to be wider front ends .... Salvage value on a bull is about $2/lb around here for 15-2000 pound animals... so about $2500-4000 for a salvage value of the bull.... half of what you paid for him is a good figure to work with.
I don't know how many cows you have but renting/leasing a bull for a set period of time would be preferable... get the calves on the ground all at the same time for uniformity in the calf crop... and anyone that does not catch, then could be bred AI.... OR SOLD.......
Make sure that you have the bull covered by the farm insurance, and have a written agreement with the person leasing him... if he breaks a leg, breaks his penis, wrenches his shoulder or gets stifled.... you will have some responsibility....needs to be written in a lease in case of injury.... we figure the bull is worth $5,000... they lease for $50/cow for 60 days ....or $500/month.... and they feed him obviously... if he gets hurt, then whatever he brings at the stockyard comes off the "value".... and the lessee is responsible for the difference .
