Happy Friday! Well, I'm trying to be happy. It looks like I now have 4 cats and none of them were ever mine.
This girl showed up while we were gone. She let's my grandchildren pet her and pick her up. She jumps up in your lap, she tries to run in the house and I think she is pregnant...🙁 Pretty sure someone dumped her. People are so irresponsible. 😡

What am I supposed to do, she's so sweet.

I have feral cats who live here. They do help with mice! That helps with snakes. I feed only 1x a day except winter.

Years back, a beautiful long haired white/tan male showed up. Full grown & wild but, loved a handout. I tried to relocate him. He came back & gave me some real "looks". Everytime I'd try to trap to neuter, he'd disappear -- return after aptmt. Guess he had a calendar 😐. Anyhow.....I could never touch him. He'd come when called, that was it. This went on for 18 yrs!!! The week before he died, he rubbed up on my leg and let me pet him on his back, briefly. Guess it was his thank you for feed and a warm barn for all those years 💔🥹 we each loved unconditionally.

I'm so glad you got to have that moment with him. 💗

It just breaks my heart that there are so many here now. People are so irresponsible and don't think about the hard life these beautiful animals will have to live. If they would just spay & neuter.

We will keep her, she's so sweet, have her fixed after the kittens and hope we can find homes for them. She is the 6th cat that's adopted us in the last 2 years. Sometimes they just disappear.

I think I'm going to try an experiment. The prewaxed frames always have a smooth look to them. We forgot a deep frame and left it in the sun. It was halfway under something. When I found it the half that was exposed had that same smooth look. First I'm going to try the heat gun on a low setting to see if I can achieve that. If that doesn't work, I will set them in the sun. I will do 4 like that and leave the other 4 as they are after I've rubbed the wax on. I want to see if the bees prefer one over the other. I will mark the frames so I can be sure of what they are when I check them.

I will checkerboard (alternate) the frames. I've noticed that bees will sometimes fill out one side of a box first. I think checkerboarding will give me a better idea of what they prefer. I'm also hoping to see if one works better than the other to eliminate the chance of wonky comb.

Maybe it won't make a difference, but it will be good to know either way.

This is the frame that was melted in the sun. I wish I would have thought to mark it.

The super frames are yellow so it's harder to see the wax. You will have to zoom in.

We will be installing the super tonight or tomorrow.
We have decided to add another honey super to our package and swarm hives. All four hives will have 2.

So we put together more honey super frames last night and I waxed the foundations. I'm going to continue my experimenting. This time I will put four heated wax frames in the middle, with two rubbed frames on each side in one of the supers. the other will have rubbed in the middle & heated on each side.

I really don't know if they will draw much comb this time of year, but I'm hoping the flow is heavy enough that they will.

There are frames of capped honey ready to be pulled. We are going camping, so we will do that next week when we get back home.

We will also be doing another treatment of OAV tonight.

Bees and blooms!

Just finished the frames & filled the supers.

Nuc hive #2: 2nd super installed on August 21, 2025.
Frames were checkerboarded. Rubbed wax, rubbed and heated wax.

Swarm hive: 2nd super installed on August 23, 2025.
Frames were installed with 4 rubbed & heated wax in the center, with two frames of rubbed wax on either side.

I hypothesize that the rubbed and heated frames will be preferred as the wax is more even.

The reason I gave the box with the 4 rubbed and heated frames in the center to the swarm hive, is because these girls have drawn some wonky comb. I'm hoping they will do a better job with the R&H frames. That being said, the wonky comb might be because of heavier wax in different places on the foundations.

I can't wait to see what they do with what I've given them.

My sister in law calls me a bee nerd, maybe she's a little correct in that...lol
