Thursday evening now... Was going to add some to the journal, around noon, but got busy doing a few things while it was not raining yet today.
It was not raining when I got up at 4 to get ready for work. I went, took samples this morning, and after the computer stuff, left and came home... Came in and got some breakfast... then went out and got the bags of potting soil out of the cart before they got waterlogged... dumped that water..
We got .4 inch from late Wed eve until 10 or so this morning. The sun peeked out a little, I put another gal of tea out to make... but then it was a bright "grey" for a good part of the day. No rain and a comfortable mid-70's....
Fed the 5 bantam chicks that are out in the crate, brought feed in for the ones that hatched a week ago... I need to get another box to move them into...I'll look tomorrow and see if there are any in the cardboard dumpster that aren't wet.
Got the samples packed to go to UPS . Gathered up several bags of stuff to go to the dumpster... I have to drive right by one on the way... Took them down and came on back... DS called and wanted to know what I was doing, could I give him a ride from Deb's, as he wanted to get the round baler in the arena... it got wet last night. Washed off the dust, but he does not like to leave it out in the rain... Last night, he went and got the 2nd load of hay from that guy where we got it a week ago...85 miles away.... and by the time he got back and got it in under cover and got home he said it was 3:30 a.m. Then he went and got Buck this morning and they went around the fence down at the farm near GF house. We want to be able to move some of the cow/calf pairs there when we get them across from the peterbilt field and into the barn lot: to bring in and work the calves... He needs to go get the third load of hay from this guy also...
Anyway, I said I would come get him and he said give him 20 min or so... So I went down and he got there a little bit later... gave him a ride back to the barn and he was going to feed one of the small rolls of hay to the group of cows in the Peterbilt field..., so I went and opened the gate for him... It had started to rain as he got the baler to Deb's arena, and was a pretty light but steady rain when I did the gate. Then he said he was going home so that was it. I got back here, and in the house.
Made some of the chicken for supper, corn and some sauteed mushrooms as they would soon start to go bad.
It is now down to 55 and it is raining lightly but steady right now... It really is a perfect rain.... The planters are all getting a good soaking... I was moving a couple of other smaller planters... ones that I had put those cheap bargain grape vines and some blueberry plants last year from Walmart closeout... Some are starting to grow , I lost a few too with the extreme cold and ice. One of the grape vines was pretty long last year... and it seems that it wound up vining down under the hydrangea bushes and when I pulled the pot up, there were some spots in the vine that had rooted and there were several "shoots" of vines coming up from there..
So, I thought, okay, I need to get these "rooted parts" back into soil, so they can grow better roots and wind up giving me more grape vines... I want them for the fence when it gets put up.... (another chapter in that story) . So I took the pot the original plant was in, and put it next to another bigger planter; buried the rooted sections into the soil in the bigger planter. and used a couple broken 1/2 bricks to keep them down in the soil. I did not want to cut them from the original plant yet. They were looking a little "peaked" because I am sure ripping up the root sections was not making them happy... But, I figure that they will get the roots re-established in the potting soil in the planter... and I will be able to eventually just cut the sections apart and have several plants.
I did lose a few of the blueberry plants I had gotten the last 2 years... that frozen "snowcrete" we got this past winter, did a number on them; and then the extreme dry spring, but there are a couple with small clusters of some berries. I might get a handful if I can keep them from the birds.
I did see the big NH rooster try to tread the little black langshan bantam hen, so not surprised that her eggs did not hatch... "Her rooster" is not getting a chance to breed her. That will get remedied very soon... I will get the other pen finished, so I can get the roof boards that Deb had, back and fixed... she texted me where they were, and get the small setting hen house redone and get the pair moved... I will probably put the pair in the setting hen house for now.. move it around on the grass. it is small and lightweight. Want the other pen done as I want to get these bantams out of the crate... and there will be more chicks to go out eventually. There are the buff leghorns and the NH's that have hatched out, plus the Vorwerk and NH and Leghorns that are set.
There is a trio of the porcelain D'Uccles, and 2 golden sebright pullets. The Porcelain cockeral is starting to crow so real funny to hear that little voice in the morning.
There are at least 2 of the cornish hens laying, and the buff leghorn hen is laying also in there. Not every day, but getting 1-2 eggs at least every other day. The leghorn is healing, but will probably not have any feathers grow back on the top of her head. She got scalped.....
We got some more rain this evening, and looks like it will be intermittent during the night. YAY...

I am tired and am going to go to bed early. Temp is down to 54 so going to be a little chilly tonight. Good night to crash early with a hot shower then a good book. Tons of things need doing... but they are NOT on the list for tonight....
