I am in the process of building fences now also we bought a house with a few acres and not a single fence on it.

I used the 2x4 for the fence stretcher when I did ours. I am the official fence stretching person as I like 'em tight. I used 1 come-a-long with a 1 strap fastened at top and bottom and then pulled out in a "v" and attached to the come-a-long. I like the idea of 2. Then you can pull the top or bottom tighter and if you aren't on level ground you will need this feature. Good idea for next round. We have about 4 acres to fence next spring, and NONE of it is level.
