We don't have cats and I won't let the kids have any because every time a stray cat is dropped off on us it shows up dead. Something rips their stomach open (yuck), they get run over, or our dogs kill them playing with them. There is so many critters running wild up in these woods I'm surprise those little stray mutts my son rescued are still alive and well. I will need to use something on them for fleas very soon. Maybe a dip.

I do not generally like using a lot of chemicals. But I am very thankful for permethrin. We have major tick issues (they'll be starting as soon as this snow melts). I have used it on the goats at times and on the dogs.

    On the subject of mothballs:
We use moth balls in small mesh bags tied to our well outside where fire ants were shorting out our pump. They work great. I used to have some under the bathroom and kitchen sink just as a preventative. Then the headaches came. I spoke to my doctor and he told me the moth ball fumes are to be avoided so I removed them. When I was a kid my grandmother had mothballs everywhere. So I assumed they were safe.

@Gorman Farm thanks for the info on the mothballs. I personally never used them because of my asthma I am sensitive to smells. This is helpful information for people who may use them however.

I found a huge tick this week. It fell on my T shirt when I was trimming bushes on a fence line. I about fell over. Here where we see minus 30 we are NOT supposed to have these critters. In 9 years since I moved back to N. Nevada, had only one summer where we had fleas, and it was short-lived and they didn't come back. Hope this is not an omen….
