Fleas!!

Suggestions on flea control; on my animals, in my yard, and even inside my home and I don’t have any pets indoors. We live in the south and it’s horrible this time of year! Frontline doesn’t even seem to have any effect on my poor dogs. We live on 15 acres so it’s not like I can treat the whole property but wound love to hear what works for some of you. Thanks in advance!

what i thenk is like a livstock defleaer. it should work with chickens, horses, cows, ect.

I use python dust when the single application liquid isnt doing it. For the general outdoors spray there are lots of options or some stuff you can use in foggers, etc. If you want more natural there is vets best yard and kennel spray or wondercide that hook on your water hose.

I spread sweet lime in the yard, concentrating where the dogs lounge the most, in early spring and early fall. It really works! Found that out many years ago when I moved to a home that had a yard full of fleas...we couldn't walk in it without having our legs black with baby fleas. I haven't used the traditional flea meds for years for either the dogs or the cat.

I'm experimenting with Wondercide (lemongrass scented) this year for the dogs in the pasture far from home. Seems to be working well for fleas, flies and ticks.

I have used Comfortis on my cats and dog to get rid of a BAD flea problem in the house. It's a prescription pill dosed by body weight and given once a month. Within 30 minutes of giving them the pill, the fleas start freaking out and then dying. Any fleas that get on them after that also die nearly instantly.

Nexgard is hands down the best flea and tick treatment for dogs. I know it’s a little pricey but that’s because it works so well. I live in the south too and know how horrible it can get. Makes you wonder how toxic it is to the dog, doesn't it? So toxic it kills the bugs and lingers in the dog's system for a long time. Sounds a little scary.

Bugs and canines are completely different species. I worked for a vet for years, seen hundreds of dogs, never once did any dog have any adverse reaction to them. Just like dewormers.. kills the worms, not the dog. Just like heartgard, fights off heart worms, doesn’t harm the dog.

We used to get fleas in the carpet in the basement, so we found that putting salt is good for killing the flea eggs as well as adults, especially if you can put it down and leave the area for a few days so they can't jump on you. Salt is relatively cheap. You can use it on tile floor or wood, just sweep it up with a broom. If you run the vaccumm, empty out the dustcup or change the bag so they can't come out the bag in your closet.

Salt works because it dries out the eggs and makes them not able to hatch.

Flea powder works to get the cats through til we can use the next liquid stuff that goes on the back of their neck. And we switch brands after 2 or 3 months and it seems to be more effective rather than using the same brand every month.

According to the FDA.....chewable flea meds cause neurological problems in dogs and some cats. It has effected thousands of dogs, resulting in 100s a deaths. These drugs work by attacking the nervous system of fleas and ticks, it does the same to some dogs which is not a surprise.

Obviously there are thousands of dogs without issues using these products. If you choose to use it that is your choice, I know I just don't want my dogs to end up being ones that have the bad reactions.

Our friend was singing the praises of seresto to us so we were going to try it then the bad news about seresto came out. So skipping that too.
