I left for work later than usual today.

Overflow is overflowing, gotta get those other rainbarrels installed!

After I got home from work I was determined to transplant at least some of the plants given to me by @canesisters .

First, from yesterday...a little research, and some options:

Not to scale, but good enough for planning.

Columbines first... they like fertile, moist, partial sun...by the small shed?View attachment 117762
I loosened the soil, which was dark, and kind of loamy. I worked in some peat moss to help with drainage.

Next I decided to prepare a place for the yarrow...needs full sun, good drainage, is drought-tolerant. Middle of the backyard?

The elderberry is on the left, but I think the yarrow will get plenty of sun for at least a few years. I loosened the soil, and dug out a lot of grass and weeds.

If the dirt was really hard I didn't shake it all off, but gave the clumps to the chickens, who made appreciative noises.

I'll continue tomorrow, after work, digging in peat moss and compost before transplanting the yarrow.

Then I will prepare spots for the Rose of Sharon and Obedient plants...the iris should be okay for a couple more days.
Both of those will be very happy in those spots - and will multiply 😁

I'm not 100% yet, but I think I will put both Rose of Sharon and Obedient plants on the north side of the house.

Remember how I cleared it out a few weeks ago?

The fig tree on the backyard side of the fence would provide some afternoon shade.

I'd like the ROS to screen my backyard from the road, so maybe if I plant them about 6' from the fence, and place Obedient plants around.

Waddayathink?

And I got 'er done.

First I planted the yarrow. I dug a short trench in the bed I'd dug yesterday, worked in some rotted coop compost and peat moss, added water and plants. And fence.

Next were the Rose of Sharon and the Obedient plants.

The north side used to have trees that have been cut down. Ugh. Roots everywhere.
IMG_20250507_183319488.jpg

I used my long-handled pruners to cut the bigger roots that the shovel couldn't handle. I dug about a foot down, 18" across so the trees have room to stretch their roots. I added peat moss and soil from the hole, watered, added rotted compost and more soil, then planted the first ROS.

The second hole had more roots to remove, but I finally got it ready, and I discovered that there were two small ROS left, so I placed them in the same hole, slightly spaced apart.

At this point it was getting dark, and I didn't want to leave the Obedient plants another day, they were not looking good, so I loosened the dirt near the fence and placed them in the ground. And gave them some water.

I can move them once they recover, here's hoping they recover.

Fence sections added to protect the transplants from me, when I mow!

Next...the irises! Tomorrow?

OMG! They've never been so pampered!💚 When I move the ROS around here, I do it forestry dept style : use the shovel to open a wedge, shove in the roots & whatever soil clung when I dug it up, stomp the wedge closed & hope for the best. 🤣
Different locale!

They will be experiencing hot weather shortly, want to give them the best chance possible.

Now, when I transplant Canna lilies I use a similar method as your forestry style. 😎
