The other reason for going to Lowes was to find a small section of pipe to anchor my driveway gate's drop rod.
These connectors were the perfect size.
I lined up the gate, sprayed WD40 on the long drillbit, and drilled a hole. I had to use my garden knife to remove some of the dirt.
Then I packed dirt around the pipe, checking frequently to make sure it still was in place.
I left the dirt level lower than the pipe to prevent dirt being washed into the opening. I added a few pebbles and gently tapped them into the dirt with a hammer.

I'll do the second gate soon. It stays closed, so it will be okay to wait a little.
