So I just purchased three york/hamp gilts and I am wanting to start breeding them! What kind of male should I get ? I was thinking berkshire but I need some expert opinions. Thanks in advance

I can't speak to the breed of boar you should get, but you might want to consider AI rather than keeping a boar.

The question is what do you want out of your pig's offspring? Do you want just plain feeders? Fast growing pigs? Lard pigs? Bacon pigs? Ham pigs?

AI for me worked out more expensive for me than feeding a boar for a limited time. What I do is get a feeder boar then keep him until he breeds the sow then slaughter him. So far I've never had problems with boar taint. He makes his earnings with breeding and then yummy meat.

Everyone has their personal preference when it comes to breeds of pigs!!!
I would choose a Duroc boar, as they are fast growing, good meat to fat ration and have awesome hams!!!!!
