My zebu!

Great pics :) Are they all as soft and velvety-coated as the petting zoo ones?

How are they on cold, how cold-tolerant are they, do you happen to know?

I'm not the OP, but I know that naturally, Zebu's are not all that cold-tolerant. They certainly wouldn't last long in the kind of winters that Wisconsin or Alberta, Canada get without having to have them in some sort of shelter or have a horse blanket to keep them warm.

I'm wondering how much barn/blanket/etc they'd need -- there used to be a farm I'd drive past frequently near here that had zebus as well as a whole menagerie of llamas and emus and funky things, but I do not know how they kept the zebus overwinter.

Very cool! We are getting our two bottle babies later this afternoon. An Angus/Simmental cross bull calf and a pure Angus heifer calf. We talked about Zebu, but decided to go with more traditional breeds. If the bullcalf shapes well and has good temperament, we'll probably keep him for breeding back to the girl in a couple years; if not he'll go in the freezer this fall and we'll find a nice "straw" boyfriend for the heifer!

There is a ranch about 2 hours north of me that keeps zebus and other exotics. We took a tour there last year and they told us that the warm climate exotics are kept in a heated barn during the winters here in Ohio.

They have an auction every fall and sell off a certain amount of their animals too to keep the population that needs housed lower.

Would absolutely love to get a bottle fed zebu calf as an addition to our farm. Does anyone know of any breeders in the Southeast? I live in North Mississippi and I have not managed to find a breeder within driving distance that has any calves. ANy info???? THanks....
