To those who live in Ohio, you may want to read this. If you milk goats, you will have to have a grade A dairy parlor once this goes into effect. It doesn't matter if you sell milk or not. It doesn't matter if you are a breeder or homesteader. The wording is poor. You only till March 10th to express your opinion. Please express your opinion: http://business.ohio.gov/reform/enotify/comment.aspx?rulenumber=901:12-13&enotificationID=14895

Here is what one person wrote to the board:

To Whom it May Concern:

1. The wording about mud needs to be adressed. I cannot speak for anyone else
in Ohio, but I have a lot of clay in my soil. In the spring, and this week
(with all the rain and subsequent flooding) there is ALWAYS mud at every place
on my property!!

2. re: Milking Parlors:

a) The rule, as proposed, means that everyone that milks a goat will
have to have a milking parlor that meets the same standards as a Grade A dairy.
This is TOTALLY insane. A family that only wants to milk a few goats for
personal use will have to build a facility that meets Grade A standards!!!

b) This would place a TOTALLY unnecessary burden on most of the dairy
goat owners in the state of Ohio. As far as I know, there is no other state
that places such an onerous burden on goat owners.

c) This would be "solving a problem that does not exist." Is there an
epidemic of people getting sick from drinking goat milk in the state of Ohio?

d) The IMPACT of this rule on Dairy Goats in
Ohio......................Dairy goats would pretty much disappear from the state
of Ohio because few people could afford, nor would want to make the required
investment. I would predict that 4H families that have Dairy Goats as 4H
projects would no longer have dairy goats.

e) This section on Milking Parlors appears to address the issue of milk
sanitation, as opposed to the care of livestock!!! As I understand the purpose
of the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board, "milk sanitation" is NOT within
their scope or purpose!!! This entire section needs to be deleted from the
rules!!!

This does not only hit the milking goats ... it hits them all. There are notes about how to dehorn & pain killers required in the process ... how to "alter" the bucks and the requirement of pain killers ... and ... for those of us who have Angoras, regualations as to shearing! This could affect all of the industry. Here we go again ... BTW ... they are doing the same thing to rabbits!

But it doesn't even seem specific to angoras....it seems to indicate that all goats who shed their fur (WHICH IS ALL GOATS) must be shorn every year.

C'mon......

"The responsible party in determining the method of castration and use of pain
management must take into consideration the animals age and weight, environmental
conditions, and facilities available as well as human and animal safety."

What, do they think ya'll don't do this already? Just run out there and say, hmm, I'm gonna cut off the stud buck's junk now with these scissors...?

Seriously, reading this, it doesn't sound like they get the concept of raising livestock. Why would you own goats to sell or for your own consumption if they didn't follow all of this stuff anyways?

I wrote to the board on this!

I understand the purpose of the board but I think the over regulation of every little detail of our lives needs to stop.

And the extremely vague language of this and a lot of other Ohio Revised Codes leaves many open to interpretations that lead to fines and more that go beyond what the original scope of the ORC was intended.

Personally I am sick seeing this type of vagueness in our state! :somad
