I have a year old doe who has miscarried twice. Once over winter and once a month or so ago, I found a half formed fetus in the stall.

Now she appears to be be carrying and her udder has started to fill out a bit. I'm thinking this time maybe she had twins and lost one? What could be a reason for her to have miscarried? Could it have been the other goats butting her? I have separated her from everyone else except the babies. I'm expecting her to kid in about 3 weeks from the looks of her. Any advice appreciated!

Google "goat miscarriages"...there are a lot of reasons that *could* be causing them...diagnosis online w/ out tons more info is impossible.

Some of the causes could be contagious, and she may be leaking fluids around your kids that could cause them to miscarry later.

Personally, if I had a yearling who'd lost a pregnancy, I'm not sure I'd have rebred her so soon.

Regardless, I do wish you luck w/ the remaining pregnancy / easy kidding.

Look up chlamydia in sheep and goats.

Treat her with Oxytetracyclene injectable 1cc per 40 lbs for 5 days.

consider copper deficiency, Are your goats on a loose mineral?

Give Bo-Se shots.

Yes, there are a lot of reasons like Roll said. If it were me I'd treat it as if it were contagious. That means keeping her quarantined, thoroughly disinfecting the kidding stall before letting the other goats use it, and doing a round of oxytet for the entire herd. I've read it's quite unlikely for chlamydial abortion to happen twice consecutively. Still, if it were me I'd feel better safe than sorry.

Did her udder fill only now, or around the time you found the foetus? If only now, have a thorough look to see if she may have lost another one.

One of mine miscarried at 3 months pregnancy and her milk production kicked in as if she had given birth normally. But I found 2 would-have-been-kids, so was sure she was no longer pregnant. I was also worried about chlamydia or some such, but all the others carried to full term, so obviously not.

You mentioned her being kicked by others - is she one that usually gets bullied? (so was mine)

If you have a vet and relevant lab within reach, they should be able to test a blood sample for chlamydia & Co, so you know what bug you're dealing with, if any.

Another possibility could be maturity. No one matures at the same rate and maybe her uterus wasn't mature enough to carry to full term.

Thanks for the responses.

I'm not 100% sure she miscarried over winter, she had some goo on her tail that I originally thought was frostbite. When I cleaned it everything came off clean. The does and my billy were all pastured together until feb. When she didn't get any bigger and didn't kid I guessed that was the mystery goo. I found the partially formed fetus about 1 1/2 months ago, I would say it was 1/2 formed. Not quite goat shape but pink with bones and an obvious skull. She is the favorite to get butted at feeding time, she has no discharge, both the other does I got from the same farm carried full term.

I will look up that stuff, I am new at this goat thing :)

Seriously look into copper bolusing. Even if you offer free choice minerals. Copper deficiency causes a lot of fertility/pregnancy issues. Early abortion being one of them.
