Like porcupine quills. They really can cause harm. I've had to take pets to the vet when they've gotten them in their ears.

Those are awful. There's an Indian village near Priest Rapids Dam, my husband used to repair their AC and other electrical issues. Anyway, there were always dogs there with quills in their muzzles. We couldn't do anything for them.Like porcupine quills.
The are a yearly battle here. There is no fighting them. We fight them in cows eyes all dry season. I can't even count how many I've dug out of eyes. Pinkeye follows if it hasn't already set in. I've never lived anywhere without them. This will be an interesting change. There is another bad thing that you are moving away from.
We used to do that with wheat that would grow out of feed.HA!! Yup. And back there foxtails were what we would grab and run around tickling everyone with. They were soft. Wish that's what they were here for sure - but nooooooooooo - we've got the killer version.
I didn't even think about porcupines. Guess I'd better look and see if they have those at home. I know there's supposed to be armadillos and some sort of woodchuck but they don't have quills or anything.Like porcupine quills.
Porcupines are farther north, I believe, upper midwest, Great Lakes areas. The are a yearly battle here. There is no fighting them. We fight them in cows eyes all dry season. We definitely have a killer version. That's darn near all we have on our property. Star thistle is a constant battle also but that just pokes it doesn't dislodge and migrate.

Well, if that's a foxtail map -- it's not quite right. I'm in So Cal - San Diego county where Calif touches the Mexico border - I'm just a little north of there. They're farther north, I believe, upper midwest, Great Lakes areas.
ETA: I correct myself, wow:

Moved here from northern IL did stuff all over IL and WIS -- never heard of them back there (meaning they may not be in WIS as I think I would've heard of them).
Yep. I thought porcupines were mainly northern woodland creatures. I was wrong.I think that's a porcupine map.![]()

Thankfully none of our dogs ever had any run-ins with them. Those barbs go in pretty deep.Okey dokey!! I'm happy with that then. Very happy I don't have porcupines here.
That said - I read a long time ago about a way to take the quills out, I ~think an old indian remedy. Something about cutting the quill?? It was so long ago I don't remember and I don't think there was even internet to check it out.![]()
