I went down to our feed store Saturday and picked up 1000 lbs (or it should have been). We have been getting this feed for the last 7 years and like a lot of folks, we store it in metal trash cans. We have always put three bags in a can and there is usually several inches of space about the feed. Saturday, three bags filled the can all of the way up with 5-6 pounds above the rim. I didn't weigh the feed but just going by volume, there was a lot mor feed than there ever has been before. I called the feed store and told them what we had seen and told them they might want to check however they calibrate their dispenser equipment.

I use the Behrens metal trash cans....I think they are something like 32 gallons ???.... and I have to unload some feed tomorrow if my back ache will let me... I will check mine... But it seems to me that I CAN NOT quite get 3 / 50 lb bags of "sweet feed".... their 12 % general pellet/grain mix;..... into those cans...
Do you have any bags to weigh on a scale there at the house???
Were your previous bags not weighed properly? Some feed is more dense than others, but you say this is the same feed you always get so....????

That's weird to say the least.

We have one Behrens and I love it since it doesnt have the handle rivets that allow water to leak into the feed. I need to buy several more. I thought all our cans held 150# of feed/3 bags, but soe of the feed we were gettng fron Atwood were 40# bags of sweet feed. I need to find a bulk supplier.

Maybe mine hold not quite 4 bags... I did not get anywhere near to unloading feed today. So much going on, and maybe in a day or 2, I will have the time to sit and catch up my journal... feed is still in the forester so safe from animals... unfortunately my turkeys are not safe and have lost a bunch... I am really P.O.ed and will have to sit with a gun...

Just to catch up... I did unload feed the other day... I can fit 5 bags in 2 cans... so about 2 1/2 bags per can... So each can holds 120-125 lbs... filled to the top. So, not sure why you could get 3 bags in a can with some space... I do realize that the 12% sweet feed is bulkier and can see where @SageHill can get 3 - 50 lb bags of alfalfa pellets in a can since they are more compact and dense, heavier, than a looser feed like I get. So, it is interesting to see/know the difference.
It is kinda like the weights and measures... a bushel of alfalfa seed or soybeans or wheat weighs 60 lbs... a bushel of oats weighs 32 lbs... a bushel of lime weighs 80 lbs... a bushel of tomatoes weighs 56 lbs but a bushel of green/string beans only weighs 24 or 25....
Still seeing the difference in feed you normally get every time is understandably questionable.

Yup. And this morning before I read this I was getting sheep mineral for the stalls (Purina loose sheep mineral 50# bags) I keep an open bag in the same size can as the pellets and was thinking 'well gee, I bet I could get 300# in the can.' Too funny we were doing/thinking the same thing at about the same time.

We are having the August heavy heat a little early this year. This morning, I was prepping for a long mowing session and wanted to make sure I took my big mug of water to stay hydrated. Of course, I filled it up and set it on the porch on the way out and immediately forgot about it so after a couple of hours of mowing, I called it quits.
