Ok so I am breaking/training a shetland pony, apparently he has some problems. My friend and me went out to the farm yesterday to train 'em. Well we took them out on the trail and I thought I would hop on and see how he was, well he bolted and of course he took me into the trees bolting at a full lil shetland gallop! He doesn't stop. We are breaking 2 ponies and Chester is the stinker that took me into the trees and Lakota is the cute lil mare that is faster than a lightning bolt. Lakota doesn't stop either. So does anyone have ideas on how to teach them to stop??
Thank you soo much!

first of all i would start from the beginning, like they were not broke at all, just like a big horse. when they bend and give on the ground, drive them with long lines, teaching turning, backing and stopping. what you described was a scared pony, and he will not stop or do anything else until you really do some trainning, not just jump on and go for an all out run.:hu

Go back to basics. Teach circling, giving with the head/neck. If he's locked on running away he's not in control - regain control. Treat him as if he's 1500 pounds and 16 hands high...do not let him get away with bratty stuff because he's little and it's 'cute' - surest way to get someone hurt. Treat 'em like a big horse and they'll act like it.
