Weeeeeelllll.... My DH refuses to let me have sheep, so THAT is really why I got goats. I was looking into hair sheep even so I wouldn't have to shear, but from what I read, they aren't so friendly as goats are. Goats are more like a dog to the sheep's cat from what I understand, but I do like a couple of my aunt's BFL ewes. They are sweethearts.
DH hates sheep because he worked on a sheep farm that had about 200 breeding head of mostly lincolns with a few suffolks and he hated their personalities and he hated fixing the fences and he hated the mean rams. Sooooo I just humor him and stick with goats who actually respect the electric fence :D

We always had a goat when I was a kid. I never even touched a sheep until this year.

Goats have a lot of personality.

They give more milk than sheep.

I don't like the taste of lamb (or the smell of it for that matter).

Wool makes me itch.

Goats are so bouncy and fun.

Goats eat weeds and brush.

But why do they take over livestock boards? I think it's because goats like to throw their owners curve balls. Nothing is ever easy with goats. They're always presenting a new challenge.

Goats are Caprine animals. Ever wonder where the word capricious comes from? Goats - duh! Goats are capricious. Just watch one frolicking in a field.

Virginia is for Pasture Farmers!
I'll stick w/my sheep. I like how quiet, calm and easy keepers they are. My two dogs non-stop stress me out, so I rather not add to their noise and havoc. Honestly I think my big dog is slowly going mental...and he is teaching the little dog all of his horrid tenancies. Nothing stops him, ah well. I'm stuck with him til death do us part...lol.

We don't have any crazy weeds or bushes as the land has been horse pasture for decades, neighbors land as well. There is one section that is our land, but on the other side of our back fence. Thorn central in there, I'd love to cut it all out and just leave the mature trees to show off the groomed creek. But that costs money and goats wouldn't stay put...lol. They would wander to the cow farmers or in the way of the deer or mounted fox hunters...

I originally wanted mini goats, but a lot drove me from them real fast. Everyone is selling goats here, bucks stink to heck, horns, no regard for fencing, eating and thus killing trees. I'm sure I am missing things to their 'con' list.
My trio of sheep haven't done a single wrong or unpleasant thing yet. They are so peaceful and wander around together nibbling grass and looking so cute. My tag-less ewe has started calling to me to share all the other animals' treats with her. big_smile
I love how they lick up oats out of your hand, no accidental nips, just fuzzy wuzzy cottonball-ness!

After 14 years of shearing alpacas once a year, I want nothing to do with shearing day. Went to a seminar that was about sheep and I just didn't care for them. They aren't bad or anything but just didn't interest me. I also didn't care for the taste of them. We had lamb for lunch and just didn't care for the taste. We are at the point that animals have to have a purpose and goats take care of milk and meat. Not to mention the amusement they give me.

We all have to decide what we like and don't like. Nothing wrong with any choice. Just what works for you.

Exactly. People ask me why i would want sheep when i could get goats. It is my preference. Sheep are not very popular in my area. In fact i only know of 2 other people who have sheep anywhere near me.
I made the decision because i love lamb and got hair sheep because i didnt want to shear. I wanted easy keepers that wasnt constantly trying to escape. I needed something that would eat pasture grass because that is all i have.

My sheep are very friendly. Depending on how they are raised some can be just as friendly if not more friendly than goats. My bottle babies couldnt be any more tame or lovable.
