💗🐝Our Backyard Beekeeping Journey!🐝💗

We went down to the Columbia river and dug up two large clumps of Yellow Flag Iris. It's invasive, but pretty and will do an amazing job keeping the water clean. It won't spread anywhere around us. Too much desert. Excellent filtration & free, win win!

We want to find some Purple Loosestrife, also invasive, but long blooming and good for filtration. It's also a pretty flower.

We divided up one clump of iris and added it into the bog filter and pond. Hubs is going to plant the other clump outside the pond, we'll have to figure out how to keep it wet. I'm sure he already has an idea.

Heading to town tomorrow. Need sugar for the bees, groceries for us and an oil change for our car. Also plan to look for more plants.

The Water hyacinth and Water lettuce are also highly invasive, but the frost kills them.

My iris limped along for a couple years until the pond developed more waste for them to filter. Now they are very thick, bloom for a long period of time. I need to thin them out.

I have both of those. I bought hyacinth years ago for our wishing well. I was so amazed at how well it cleared the water.

I'd like to get some of the Blue Flag Iris, it's native. Would be pretty to have both in there.

My husband is really getting into this. He's the one that suggested finding the Iris, Loosestrife and our trip to the pond store last week. He even said the burn pit would be a great place for a larger pond, we could put koi into it. Then he backtracked, we have so many other things to do. I told him, he said it, so it will probably happen...lol He's enjoying the fish too. They're finally starting to come up to us when we feed them.

My ponds are too small for koi, but I did have goldfish a couple times. They kept disappearing. Then I caught a huge bullfrog, and knew where my goldfish went. :hit

I netted minnows from a friend's pond at her suggestion, added them to both ponds. They reproduce fast enough to make up for frog predation, and eat mosquito larvae!

My pond is also too small for koi. We brought home a few tadpoles, they are too small to be bullfrogs.

I want to find some mosquito fish, so far no luck. Not sure I want to buy online, shipping costs for fish is expensive.

Bought more plants for in and around the pond today and a couple of shrubs for the yard. Wine & Roses Weigela & a Tiny Wine Ninebark.

We wanted to add more color.

This has so many plants in it, we will be dividing them. I think it will be pretty next to the yellow flag iris.

I think I'm done buying plants for now. We need to do the rock work and start getting everything planted. We also bought 4 new flat rocks that we felt would go well with our Montana rock.
