Is there anything that won’t burn, but help heal his ears? Yes, his ears are sore and it hurts. Something healing, but soothing? It’s slowly getting better in just the few days I’ve been using the vanilla.
Zinc oxide, like Desitin but without the baby powder added. I had to order mine online, no one carries the pure stuff anymore. Make sure it's the simple stuff with JUST zinc, mineral oil, and petrolatum.

This is what I got:

It took some sweet talking this morning for Buford to let me spray him. He ran off a dozen times. Hanging his head down, like he’s being punished, grinning to say, what did I do? Why am I in trouble? This is what he does when he’s uncomfortable or doesn’t understand. He hopped up on his platform, so I sat on it too. He started nibbling on me, like I had fleas. According to a long time breeder, Buford likes me. He “fleas” me when he’s not sure or is excited.

I left and came back a little later. I stood at the gate that would let him and Sheba out on the field. I baby talked him, laughed at his cute grinning face and reassured him. Finally he sat, let me hold his collar and spray him. I held him a bit longer and petted him, bragged on how good he was and let go.
We are working on this.
Oh goody. Next is aloe Vera gel.

This evening after I fed Buford and Sheba, Buford and I talked. I told him that I’m trying to keep those bad ol flies off his ears, I know it hurts and so on. He let me touch his ears on the underside. If he didn’t understand the words, he understood the love and concern. He stood very still while I gently touched his ears. I’m just glad I finally found something that works.

Lidocaine works on pain but burns at first. Try a fly spray with pyrethrin. It is easier on the skin. 25 vyears I had a pony that was allergic to regular old fashioned fly spray. Sprayed him all over and went riding in the wash. No flies, but he was hard to handle and fnally bucked half the way home. When I unsaddled and sprayed him off with water, he had giant welts from the fly spray all over him! I went to the feed store and bought the fly spray with pymethrin (new at the time) and he was fine after that.
