You need to know that, and it is a tool to be used in the future, knowing his reaction to the level you used will let you know just how much to use. You're doing great. At this point he should know a ~little bit about reacting properly to the cats.Caleb got agitated by the outdoor cats taunting him, and was acting up, badly. I yelled at him, and he cowered.
I am trying to not yell at him, and I wouldn't ever strike him. I hate seeing his reaction to loud yelling.
I was going to suggest something similar when you said Debbie walked past the gate and Caleb didn’t bark, but rather looked at you. As in seeing the cat is the cue to not bark and to look at you instead.- but early on I started giving Sage a treat when they barked. She learned it ignore their barking and not join in. You could try something similar with taunting kitties.
